Just chipping in some support for Internetpilot. You are not alone. No Apple hardware is ever going to cross the threshold of my home.

the Nikon people are already complaining about the sensor size lol
I'm thinking if both companies have gone down the same path there is some serious market research that validates the choice

it would be really interesting if they shared the mount but somehow I doubt it

I wonder if they really could do that??? The industrial espionage has certainly told beforehand that another brand is going to use the Q name, so if the Nikon's really called that as well, I don't think it's a coinsidence.

The German "source" already thought about this...

könnte man bei der einheitlichen Namensgebung “Q” vielleicht auch auf die Idee kommen, dass das Bajonett der Pentax Q und der Nikon Q gleich ist. Wer weiß?
"Freely" translated : Using the consistent abbreviation "Q", could one get the impression that the mount is the same? Who knows?

Although I also speculated a while ago in a similar direction (a mount to join?), it is (now) rather hard to believe.

if ti is the same mount Pentax has far more to gain than Nikon just by having their product associated with the Nikon brand in the general consumers eyes

But for the record, no matter if Nikon or whoever joins this Q craze, it still is a very bad concept.

Or it could just be they're both continuing past mistakes and will keep on making pretty much the worst compacts in the business (with the exception of Kodak). Pentax and Nikon make my favorite DSLR's, but I don't know what it is about those two companies, but neither has ever managed to make a compact I'd buy (I guess Ned and I agree on that one). Looks like that trend will continue if Nikon also chooses to go down the 1/2.3 path.

There's no record that this is a bad concept at all.
If people today are still talking about the Auto 110 system, the Q mount will analogously go far.
Remember, this is not a system for everyone to get excited about.

I think it depends :
In principle, the Q mount could be an alternative to m43, allowing even APS-C sized sensors. Just think about Pentax, Nikon and Canon joining for another superior mirrorless standard...

There you have it the second mirroless. Nikon dont want to spend R&D to mirrorless mount, so partner with Pentax for the Q, since Q-mount is new it is a good start.

All it really is, is a p&s with interchangeable lenses, which make it more fiddly.

It doesn't have any real benefits over a good overall p&s like Sony HX5v.

Sony benefits;
  • 24 - 250 zoom - good glass
  • 10fps shooting with tracking - yes it works
  • panorama mode - it definitely has it's place - just sweep left to right
  • twilight mode - at high iso it take 6 shots and blends together
  • very very good HD video incorporating a dual optical image stabilizer for very smooth hand held video even while walking
  • less then half the price

Oh I forgot about macro as well

IQ - good enough which is governed by the sensor size - which is never ever ever ever going to be at the level of a larger sensor given the same technology

If I'm taking a scenic shot with lets say a Nex with the 16mm pancake and the tog with with his uber expensive Q - which camera is going to deliver the best IQ??

Certainly not the Q

So what is one actually paying for in the Q???

Add build quality, correct me if i'm wrong but the nex is not a full magnesium body either

and a cool factor that is yet to be established, that's down to marketing
(why do people buy $200 jeans when you can get functional jeans for $20- or for that matter classic name jeans like levi 501 for $50)
