Hi GibbyTheMole,

The DA 55-300 is a great lens for the Q -- compact -- lightweight. Unless I find something better, it looks to be my default hand-held super tele zoom on the Q. I tried it out right after the Q grew Focus Peaking and SR with adapted lenses with the firmware update v1.1.

https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-q/204091-q-fw-v1-1-da-55-300-handheld.html

These were close range, but handheld at the full 300mm. Preliminary results at long range were also surprisingly good with SR and good long lens handholding technique. We haven't had good enough weather since the update to really put this combination through its paces. . .

The SP 60-300 should be a very good lens on the Q -- a bit heavy, but the push pull (one-touch) zoom would be make for faster handling, and if it's a parfocal (same focus for all FLs -- or at least very close), that would also be an advantage. I don't own one, but might look into getting one if others get good results with it.

Scott

Hey, snostorm...

Just checked out your link. Neat setup! The main reason I was thinking of the Tamron SP 60-300 on the Q rather than the Pentax 55-300, is because the Tamron has it's own aperture ring, and dedicated macro mode. As far as IQ goes, the Tamron is as good at the Pentax 55-300, and maybe a little sharper in the 60-100mm range. The Tamron is sharp even wide open, at all focal lengths, where the Pentax 55-300 is a bit soft from 55 to about 80mm. The Pentax is a terrific performer, though.

Sharp is good, but it will be interesting to see if the Tamron can match the Pentax zoom for lack of finging. The Q has defeated some pretty good glass. Can't wait to see your report.
thanks

No kidding. Just for jollies I put the Q on my Pentax-A 400/5.6, a pretty good optic but certainly has some loCA. Like rainbows on the Q.

One of the lenses I was thinking about when posting! Have the same 400. My Canon FD 200 macro doesn't do well either. The Pentax A*200 macro is great.

When buying a new lens for NON Q use, would test it on the Q to see how good it is. The Q makes a great test bed for comparing two similar lenses. The Q will expose differences in lenses that are hard to detect in other ways. Q is live pixel peeping.
thanks
