David Pogue of NY Times reviews the Q

Pogue's State of the Art technology column is one of my weekly reads and the latest has a review of the Pentax Q and Nikon 1 cameras. He seems to like the Q a lot, "..when it comes to design, features and usability, Pentax has knocked one out of the park." He adds "there are four drawbacks" - listing price, poor battery life, lack of a dedicated movie button and the small sensor.

Pretty much my own conclusions too. I bought a Lumix LX-5 as my walk-around camera in part because of its larger sensor and dedicated movie button.

Is this available on the net?

I have used Q for a week now and the solution Pentax has to starting video is just fine. Turning the knob and pressing the shutter release is done in about a second and no problem for me, but if one need faster access, a dedicated button is probably the solution.

If this doesn't work, just go to NY Times web page and browse Pogue's columns - you'll find it under cameras.

Can the front function button be set up as a video button or is that just for the built in processing effects?

The front button is only for jpg settings like effects and so on. But they also work in video mode.

I am not sure what you want. If it's fast and easy activating of video, it is equally fast turning the mode knob. It's not locked as on K-7 and K-5 and easy to turn. And video mode is next to HyperP-mode :-)
