Studio shoot ... with Common Green Darner

I came home the other night and was mightily surprised to see a big dragonfly on the curtains next to my front door. Quite the stroke of luck -- I love photographing dragonflies, but they're usually a bit more of a challenge to track down. Here's a couple taken with the 100 mm WR macro mounted on the Pentax Q. For the last one, I used an LED flashlight for the back-lighting.

Original Q+fujinon 6mm f1.2 at f5.6 I think. I don't think this lens has any close focus limitation or if there is it would be measured in nanometers.

Nice work! How did you light the first two?

Thanks Larry. The first two were lit by what happened to be in the living room, 1) ambient light from a torchiere type lamp that mostly provides light by bouncing it off a white ceiling; 2) a swing arm halogen floor lamp that provided more direct lighting. I had not yet decided to move my model to a better location for those 2 shots. White balance was a bit warm, so I did adjust that in post. I have to say, that at this point, I have little to no clue about proper use of lighting/flash and muddle through when the occasion calls for additional lighting. I'm trying to rectify this, by hunkering down with a book and checking out the strobist website.

Wired, how did you get that hockey shot? When I tried to take shots of my local hockey game, I got a lot of pink banding on the photos, I'm guessing due to some interference between the lights and my shutter speeds.

Charles.

A few from Niagara Falls from our room with the 01, most of my shots were with the K30, something about the rain and spray. They were offering some great deals, would you believe $159 per night with breakfast and a dinner credit for this view. Night view hand held, traveling light. The K30 did much better but this is not the place for that.
