They say the best camera you can use is the one you have with you. The Q is ideal because it is so compact that you have no excuse not to have a camera handy.

I took the Q to Thailand recently, along with my k5/k7 and a few lenses. I think the Q will be making far more trips in the future and the big boys might just be left behind.

The Q has its weaknesses, such as a lack of telephoto (which has just been announced, I notice) and bad flaring when shooting into the sun because Pentax (a la Canon) failed to provide a hood with the lenses, but for a small, light versatile travel combo, it's hard to beat.

Here's a couple of Raw files processed through Capture One Pro

Post-processing in-camera with the Pentax Q

I had never played around with the Pentax Q "Digital Filters" (in camera) before... not as you take the photo, but in processing in the camera after taking the original photos. I started with a Bracketed Exposure set of three images (normal, over, under) and then played around with the digital filters and their parameters. If I saw something that looked decent, I would Save As...

You can also use two or more digital filters in combination on your image. Since I shoot RAW+, the original RAW files are still on the card, untouched for me to play with in post-processing "for real" with Snapseed or Lightroom or Photoshop. Not all images will be everyone's cup 'o tea (they aren't all MY cup 'o tea, either!)

I put all 22 images (including the original 3) in a Flickr set for those interested.

Jac and Dadipentak, thanks.

the reduced resolution demanded by this site robs these exposures of the true depth I see on my monitor in the PP phase.

I say the Q is an exceptional little beastie, a credit to the Pentax engineers who came up with the concept. It has changed my mind about mirrorless cameras.

I tried to do some 'comparison shots' where we took a a similar image with the Q and the K-5.
Once I get some time I'll PP the results and see if it makes a significant difference.

I'm in awe of the Q. What it does with that tiny sensor is remarkable.

Here's one more for ya: This one might be used in an upcoming nation catalog (you can probably guess who the client is...) I should hear back today if they want any changes. This is the only shot I did with the Q. For the rest of the catalog, I used a Canon 7D and 1DSmark3.

Model: PENTAX Q
ISO: 125
Exposure: 1/30 sec
Aperture: f/5.6 and ND filter on
Focal Length: 8.5mm
