I totally had to rely on the AF lens for this one. I can't see worth crap yet today. My eyes are very dry and blurry. I can hardly see to type this. I had just put in my second dose of eye drops when I saw this guy on our steps. It was such a cute shot though I could not resist. I grabbed Q and went for it anyway.

Hi wildman, what lens did u shoot these with?

I was out shooting with the Q-S1 and the Tamron 70-200 this morning and boy it was hard work...many misses and many crap shots....all thanks to my skills
It's a 560mm scope not a conventional photo lens.
BTW I can't imagine hand holding a 200mm on a Q and also trying to compose and focus through that dim LCD - good luck.

My gear and another shot from the other day...

I had all kinds of adventures in our backyard when I first got my Q-7, as chronicled in my thread https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/136-pentax-q/284804-baby-steps.html

Several lessons I should probably mention:
(1) old lenses often have real issues
(2) a new lens may have issues if you cannot control the aperture (around f/5.6 is probably best)
(3) you need to be able to see (I got a hoodman clone to help with that) because focusing is hard work
(4) you need a stable platform, because a methodical approach is needed to find your target (sometimes I zoom out and in), so I got a walking-stick / monopod.
It's amazing how much your skill level goes up when you have the right equipment!

Look at it this way - your Q at 200mm is giving you 21x magnification. At that magnification it's impossible to hand hold it steady enough, for photo purposes, to get consistent results.
Even a 20x pair of binos are pretty much useless just for visual purposes without a tripod.
It's been my experience that anything much beyond 7x magnification (50-60mm FL lens) on the Q (or, perhaps, any camera) handheld is an exercise in frustration.
I'm not talking about the random dumb luck keeper but consistent results..
BTW my 560mm is giving me about 60x magnification using the S1.

You and the Q did good on the close up of that guy!

I keep thinking I have a sharp, in focus shot with the 03 lens but not so far. I think I got pretty close to that with this one. It's a fun lens, even if it is a little frustrating.

Thanks Wildman. That 560mm scope is extremely sharp!
By the way I shoot the Q + 70-200 using a tripod. Handhelding the combo is out of the question and is an exercise in frustration.

Thanks reh321 for those tips.

Here are the shots I took yesterday. Many many many crap shots and got deleted afterwards. Here are 2 slightly more presentable ones. Birding is harder than I thought

Saw this male House Sparrow grabbing seed and flying into the Ash tree so figured he was feeding his family somewhere in there and sure enough.
Q at 560mm at about 50 feet full frame.

Very nice. When I look into any tree of any type right now, all I see is leaves and more leaves.

Here's a panorama shot of Mount Kinabalu of Sabah, Malaysia. Shot using Q with 15mm lens and stich using Hugin and processed in lightroom.
