Last year we discovered a robin nesting on one of the pillars which supports our porch roof. Apparently she was able to build her nest in just one day, so she had the job done before she discovered that we used the garage door {just behind her} at least twice a day, and the front door {just ahead of her} at least once a day. Every time we used either door, she freaked out. {I was able to take this picture of her from the front door before she freaked out} Other than the door that leads to our back deck, these are the only entrances to the house, so we didn't have the option of not using them while she sat on the nest ... so not surprisingly, her eggs never hatched.
This year I discovered the nest when it was only partly built, so I destroyed it and used duct tape to temporarily box in that area, so she moved to the bush at the garage corner. Apparently being less open made her feel more protected, so she no longer freaked out when we used the doors. Yesterday I was sitting on the porch when I heard some brief "cheeping" as she left the nest, so I went inside for my birding kit, and from the safe {from her perspective} distance of the porch was able to get this picture.
