As a new member I hope someone can give me some advice. I bought the Q a week ago and I love it, I have taken some nice pictures with it, but I have found that any pictures that contain trees or bushes are smeared and fuzzy, well only the foliage. I did a test by taking shots of the same scenes with my Nikon D40, which is a 6MP camera and I used the same aperture on both cameras. The foliage in the Q shots always comes out horribly smeared, all detail is gone. Do others find the same?

CobusBasson, example photos would help diagnose your problem.

You mentioned that you used the same aperture, but have you tried the same shutter speed? Leaves are known to move around when windy and a fast shutter speed may be necessary depending on the conditions. Once again, this is only a guess based on the information provided, if you have samples then someone can provide better feedback.

Hi Aegon, see the two pictures below, one taken with the Pentax Q, the other with my Nikon D40. Pentax with the 01 prime, Nikon with a Nikkor 35mm prime, both at f2. Shutter speeds as selected automatically by the cameras according to iso etc. The problem is that all of my Pentax Q pictures where I have trees in the background have a lot of smearing and fuzziness.

Nikon image of same scene, slight differences due to lenses etc., but it's the detail that's my issue.

I am not sure if I inserted the images correctly in my previous post, so here is a test just with the Pentax Q image again.

OK, I realize that I am doing something wrong with the picture uploading, I will have to get some advice on how to insert pictures, I don't know if there are any forum rules etc., but I will try and sort it out. Any advice on the best way to insert picture will be appreciated, also the maximum size and how to link to the full siez picture in flickr. The links I copied from flickr don't seem to work correctly.

You need to use bbcode, not html code. Either click on the image button in the editor and then paste the photo url, or follow these instructions:

Hey,

I copied the link and checked out the file in flickr. I don't know that this would be enough, but the exif data shows that it was shot at f5. This isn't crazy for the Q but some diffraction might be setting in. There might be other factors as well but it is hard to say.

I try to avoid taking "test-shots" and rather prefer enjoy photography nowadays with my Q. But yesterday there was a good opprotunity for low light high iso pictures with the 01 Prime. The AF was completely useless but manual focusing was very easy with the MF assist.

wide open iso 800 1/30 +0.3 Raw developed in Silkypix:

wide open iso1600 1/100 +0.3 heavy cropping also needed more PP due to underexposure.

FE and in camera filters:

this one was also saved by filters and some PP as the original was underexposed on my face-the Sun behind my head- not ideal lighting:

Ok, here goes again, the picture that shows the badly smeared leaves.

The same picture, almost, with my Nikon D40 and 35mm f1.8 prime lens. The colors are not great and my Nikon has a tendency to overexpose and I didn't correct for it, not to mention that the sky is always grey this time of the year in Paris so pictures are often flat unless you compensate for it.

Again, this was just a test so I didn't try to take a great arty picture or adjust the exposure etc., it was just to see the effect of the leaves.

By the way, the Pentax Q image was taken using natural color setting, but I cranked up the saturation. I have since discovered that the extra saturation contributed to the smearing effect, especially when you look at the pine needles.

I am amazed by the detail and sharpness that some people are getting here, that's why I am still hanging onto my Q, despite me not getting great results at the moment.

Below are three more test shots, the one with the tractor, or whatever you call that thing, is disappointing as it was taken at low iso but it looks grainy and not sharp at all. Light wasn't great, so maybe it's that, but anyway, it's just for info.

Here's a color version of one of the pictures uploaded previously. This was shot in fairly low light conditions, I am happier with this result compared to some previous results. It confirms my previous finding that increasing the saturation causes problems with smearing. This one is natural color without increasing saturation.

Some more pictures. Note that I don't claim that these are good pictures at all, they are just tests from my first few days with my Q. By the way, I love the camera, looks, handling, features, all of these are great, I simply love it. However, with regards to IQ I am not 100% convinced yet. The thing is, I paid 284€ for it, brand new, and at that price I think it's great. I paid 400€ for my Canon S90, I haven't compared pictures yet, but just in terms of handling etc. I prefer the Q. It is like a mini DSLR, I stuff it in a pocket or my bag that I take to work and whenever I feel like it, I just whip it out and snap. My Nikon D40 DSLR on the other hand is a great camera, but because of its size I never take it with me, what good is that?

@cobus I haven't really looked at your pics since I'm on a mobile but in general I wouldn't try to compare my Q output to my DSLR output given it's sensor size and small lenses.

The Qs other advantages make me carry it all the time and if care is taken it can make some wonderful images.
