A couple of experiments. Quick and dirty, MF, dire light, but I hope they capture something of the spirit of the place.

I like this very much!

In a weird way, it is almost "Metropolis"-like!

Nice shots Andreas, hand holding and getting the water to blur can be a task but it looks good.

It was a bit hard yes, especially since the temperature sunk over the day and it was pretty windy. I found 2s/12s shutter release to be more useful than shake reduction in this case and of course coupled with breathing technique.

I especially like the first one, both the treatment and the composition. The figure at left, and the eyes we can just see in the second booth give this a real decisive-moment feel. Dogfish Head, too!

Many thanks, jpzk, baro-nite & Nick! If you're ever in Pittsburgh looking for a drink in a relaxing, unpretentious setting--and don't mind clouds of cigarette smoke--I recommend visiting 'the Squirrel Hill Cafe'. (I'm old enough to find it slightly nostalgic to come home smelling of cigarettes.)

My Fujian 35/1.7 continues to be the only C mount lens I have that really works for taking technically good photos. It has lots of field curvature, but if only part of the image needs to be in focus it's not that bad already at f/2 and just fine at f/2.8. (I've only tested the center though.)

It has a pretty massive focus shift as it's stopped down, which is inconvenient, especially if trying to focus at night.

This is at f/4, it should have been at f/5.6 to get the edges sharp.

I'd love to start contributing to this thread but I feel like my shots are really bad, since this is my first camera other than a p&s. Any tips on what ISO's or Apertures will work best for me? All of you guys' shots look amazing, so I was wondering what kind of tips you might have.

Thanks James! Well, the light was really great at that time so it helped a bit

Oh, dive right in on posting photos -- you'll get a friendly reception, and you'll likely get comments that will help you learn faster. Nothing wrong with keeping the camera on Auto mode. Main issue is likely to be when you are in low light and the flash kicks in; built-in flash rarely produces great-looking results when it is the primary light source.
