Pentax Q-S1 w/Tamron SP 60-300mm. Shot on tripod at 300mm = equivalent 1380mm on full frame. No crops.

Hundreds of tiny critters in the yellow, but easier to see the ones on the white petals.

Switched to Macro on the lens and moved in to where I could focus again.

Moved in even closer for maximum magnification (1:4), and a fly showed up.

More from the Pentax Q-S1 w/Tamron SP 60-300 at 300mm = to 1380mm FF when used with this sensor. Shot in RAW and edited of course, but I remain amazed at how sharp this lens is.

At f/5.6

This was at f/6.3 and was sharper than the 5.6 version. If you open the pic on Flickr you can just make out the text on the grey pole to the right.

The same at 60mm = 276mm on FF:

Mockingbird at 300mm = to 1380mm FF:

Thanks!

All the Tamron SP 60-300 (23A) pics were shot using a tripod and 2 second self-timer. I will try a monopod when I'm able to.

2 second timer setting on the q? Or with an additional remote?

2 second self timer on the Q-S1, to remove vibrations from pressing the shutter release. A remote would be nice to have.

Beautiful image Piotrek K! That eye is something.

rmcnelly, you really do want a wireless remote with the Q. You get almost instantaneous "mirror lock up" with a mirrorless camera. It is so great for ultra telephoto photography. No vibration.

Interesting. I thought havng a monopod/tripod was enpugh to stop the vibrations. Guess i should ramp it up a bit eh? All my recent qs1 shots were taken handheld while mounted on the monopod

At 1380mm equivalent focal length it doesn't take much to jar the image and the length of this lens just adds more risk of movement. I've used this lens on my Panasonic GX8 which has a 2x crop factor and use the self timer to reduce vibrations when taking shots of the moon. I'm struggling to get a smooth shutter release without jerking the Q-S1 and may try using a hot shoe mounted thumb rest from my X100 to see if that helps.

I took the Tamron SP 60-300 out yesterday with the monopod and found it very difficult to keep steady at the 300mm setting, much easier at 200mm = 920mm FF equivalent . I tried changing my left hand grip either on the lens or the monopod without finding a clear solution. I'm recovering from an extensive left rotator cuff surgery and currently have little strength/endurance with my left arm :-(. I think I'll have better results once my shoulder fully heals.

With super telephoto vibrations are a real problem! With DSLRs even the mirror movement can cause visible vibrations. On the Q, that is not a problem. But pressing the shutter button is a big shake, so using timer (even better, with a remote) is best. Don't move around the tripod, as walking nearby can cause vibrations (this is mostly a problem for long exposures). Even wind or a breeze can cause vibrations if the lens is big.
The heavier the tripod, the less this will be a problem. But heavy tripods are bulky and difficult to transport so you have to find a compromise.
Of course, technique is important as well. For me, my results improved once I learned to press the shutter button slowly, gently. When I first started I didn't even notice that when I pushed the button I actually pushed very suddenly and with too much power. Its not needed and it has negative consequences. If you are hand holding the camera, using a good stance or bracing against something like a wall or tree can make a big difference, as well. Walking quickly, then suddenly stopping, extending arms while breathing heavily and snapping a shot usually leads to blur. Taking a couple seconds and being aware of yourself improves things a lot

Edit: Sorry if I went on bit of a rant there its just something I struggled with when I first started and its a weird realization people don't often fully appreciate

Q-S1 and Tamron SP 60-300mm Adaptall lens, shot on a monopod on a breezy day. More keepers than I thought.

Severe crop, just caught the eagle at the edge of the frame.

Severely backlit, but shot in RAW so was able to pull some color out of the wing.

Pentax Q-S1 w/Super-Takumar 35/2, using a fisheye lens profile in Lr to create the distortion for the abstract.
