Out of my Comfort Zone

A ban on "professional" cameras is quite common at festivals and major concerts. My Q7 can always get in, but then you have to work within the system parameters.

Q7 and 06 Zoom, wide open, stage lighting. Heavy rain, no viewfinder, constant pushing and shoving from those wanting the view I've got.

Haze removal slider hard over, nothing left.

I got my Q into a few venues that prohibit "professional" cameras. The Q can do quite well indoors.

We could have done with a roof! I have never been so wet on a shoot, not even under an Icelandic waterfall!

Well done! I hope that your Q7 and 06 lens are OK though, look at the raindrops captured with 1/200 sec, they're fast, which means big!

Isn't that the sign of the best tool for the job?
Cool shot and subject!

Thanks kwb, they are both fine. I went for the big hands around small camera approach.

This approach also works best for me. I have tried the "big weather resistant camera and lens" approach in the past but found out that the projections on the front lens were ruining the pictures. A Pentax Q has no water resistance but it's so easy to protect it from the rain while shooting and conceal it in a pocket between shots, that it makes a very good all-weather camera.

Cheers!

"Cup of swirl anyone?"

Went on holidays to Spain and grabbed my Q7 kit. Finally had some time to fool around with the Yashica 13mm cine lens. If you like swirly bokeh this set up will certainly provide it.

Continuing the theme of Q getting into venues that prohibit "professional" cameras, the venue for the recent European Gymnastics championships had a "30cm" rule. That was a relaxation of their usual rule, which prohibits all cameras with interchangable lenses. Next time I go, I'm taking the XG-1. That'll confuse them.....

This venue didn't prohibit cameras, but I didn't actually take the picture due to being in the band...

I always thought the bats only hang from horizontal-ish places like a branch or ceiling, but apparently they can hang from vertical concrete surface. I found this tiny bat (about 2" or about 5cm) on the corner of vertical walls of our office building. Shot from some distance with Q7 and 06 at 45mm, f/5, cropped.

Vertical lines and bat by k kwb, on Flickr

I also came as close as I could focus, maybe 70cm or so?, with the same camera/lens but f/2.8. Again cropped some.

While approaching I was very careful but the guy noticed and moved his upper body a bit as you can see from the picture. I backed off as slowly and quietly as I could and eventually it went back to sleep.

I first thought "cool, an all-saxophone band!" but the tiny one on the left seems to have a straight body. Is that a saxophone too?

And are you the guy playing the one on the right that looks huge (to me anyway)? Look at the size difference, huge one is probably 3 times as long as the tiny one considering the straight/bent difference!

Say hi to the person who actually took the picture BTW, that person did a great job.

Yup, that's a straight soprano - curved ones are also available. Then there's 4 altos, 3 tenors and 2 baritones, with, as you rightly surmised, me playing the bari at far right. By my calculations it should indeed be about 3.2x as long as the sop, so you're right there, too!

I'll pass on your compliment to my wife, who gets stuck with the Q-S1 on these occasions. She's by no means a natural photographer, the remote was playing up and she couldn't use the gorillapod anyway due to someone sitting in front of her... Just the usual little PP tweaks for ISO 1600 noise, harsh lighting and a bit of a crop needed.

Cute bat, by the way. And having just looked at your flickr page I'm reminded you're the person whose "office building" just happens to be one of the LIGO installations! Way cool...

Cheers

Jonathan

Thanks for soprano and bari explanation Jonathan.

Non-photographer wife with steady hands? Lucky you!
