Doe was taken at ISO 800 ( not by choice - it was getting very dark) Shutter speed was under 1/100. Pentax DA*300 at f4.

Eagle was much further away. Pentax DA*300 f4 ISO 200.
thanks for looking

Can you get a shot at F8 and post a full size or a crop? At F4, that doe shows pretty damn good detail already on a websized image.

A shot at f/8 will look worse than one at f/4 because of diffraction.

Oh that's right, it's a smaller sensor. I was thinking in aps-c form. Thanks!

Mistral75 is correct - f8 will look worse. I use the 300 at f4 - 4.5. I need higher shutter speed and lower ISO more than smaller aperture/depth of field. Image would have greater detail at ISO 125 - 200. Alas, it was too dark and I got many blurred shots due to the slow shutter speed (1/30 range).

I can't download full size file since they are around 23mb Raw files. Have no idea how to do a 100% crop using Photoshop Elements 9. If any one wants to enlighten me fire away ( keep it simple no computer expert here).
thanks

Giklab the converter is not autofocus. manual only. Not so bad with lcd magnification mode built into the Q. The mirrorless Q also gives the advantage of "mirror lockup"all the time without delay. Used with the Pentax wireless remote and rear mounted sensor - it is vibration free ( no moving shutter either).
thanks

Hi barondla,

Nice work! The doe looks great.

Have you tried using your ballhead in "gimbal" mode? This is done by dropping the ball's shaft into the "portrait" slot and rotating the lens in the tripod ring 90 to keep the camera in landscape orientation. It allows only vertical and horizontal movement of the camera (with both the ball and the panning lock loosened slightly), thus preventing any tilted horizons -- it's easier to manage the camera. . . I've used this with much larger lenses before getting an actual gimbal head, and it really works as long as you keep in mind that this might make your tripod a bit unbalanced, so you need to be more careful when leaving the whole setup unattended.

As far as the 100% crop, all you have to do is bring down the borders of the crop to something under the 1024 x 700 size limits of the site, then save as a jpeg. This will post as a completely unaltered segment of the original.

Thanks. Haven't tried the gimbal ball method yet - but I will. The Gitzo tripod is big enough that it doesn't care what angle the 300 hangs at.

Will look into the 100% crop. Maybe the weekend before time frees up, have photography class and photo club this week.
thanks
