Moonshoot with Q and DA*300

So I know others have done this before, but I couldn't find the shot. Here is a shot I took the other evening with my Q10 and the DA* 300mm (Pentax Q to K adapter). I seem to recall the picture I saw someone else took was sharper, but maybe it was the same. I certainly has learned that there is very little room for error.....

BTW, I did some extensive testing of my lenses on the Q and compared to my K3. The DA* 300 on the K-3 is better than any of my shorter lenses (77/100/M135/A135) on the Q - comparing cropped pictures at same stopped down aperture. The 100/135 lenses on the Q are about the same as my K3 + 55-300mm at 300mm. The DA* 300mm on the Q blew away K-3+DA*300mm cropped pictures. I'll try to post more of the results later if I figure out how to it present it in a reasonable way. I would be curious to see how well the K-5 perform in the same tests. Regardless it is somewhat of apples and oranges comparing size of equipment, costs, capabilities (i.e. no AF on Q), 5.6x difference in equivalent focal length, and size of resulting cropped pictures... Very intriguing!

Getting my Red Dot Monday, and an 01 early next week. Seriously thinking of upgrading to the Q7...

Pictures below
1) Moon with DA* 300 at -1 (f5.6, 1/80 sec)
2) Non-cropped 300mm Test picture (I had a heack of time getting enough distance without moving everything in my yard! )
The following all taken at the same distance and cropped to the same area -
3) K-3/DA*300 f5.6
4) Q/DA*300 f5.6
5) K-3/HD 55-300 f5.8
6) Q/DFA100WR f5.6

If you already use an arca Swiss type setup then the combo with plate is a great deal.
I have the one with the 100mm plate which I attach to my DA *300 that has the same mount socket as the adapter.
That one is way better than the original foot and I can't see why you would pay a premium for a lesser product in the original.

That looks really good to me. Some CA reduction and nice sharpening will make it pop.

My official Pentax PK-PQ adapter will arrive tomorrow, and my tripod foot is on the way, as well. I have a couple of lenses that I plan to try as poor man's super-telephotos: a Vivitar/Kiron 70-150 f/3.8, and a Vivitar/Kiron 75-205 f/3.8, as well as a Kiron MC7 2X Teleconverter. Both of those lenses and teleconverter work very well on my K-30 and Sony NEXes, so I'm hoping to get some good long range shots with the Q.

Trying out my new Pentax PK-PQ adapter. The first photo is with a Vivitar/Kiron 70-150 at maximum zoom, looking through my window and across the front yard. Using a monopod, my aim was to isolate the statue by bringing the right eye into focus. Second photo is hand held, using an SMC Pentax-M 50/1.7. It has been some learning curve, getting used to adapted lenses on the Q. When it works, it works very well. When it doesn't . . . . just keep shooting.

Tony, you are off to a good start with adapted lenses on the Q. The focus is right on- not an easy thing to do. You have the skill, and practice will make it a little easier.

You now know how addictive Q adapted telephoto shooting is. Enjoy.
thanks
barondla

Vivitar seems to do a good job. Post more images when you get the chance.

Tony, Nice job! It is great to see the venerable old M50 1.7 put to such good use on the Q. Keep it up!

Thanks Larry. As I recall, the 70-150 was f/8 and the 50/1.7 was f/4.

Thanks barondla. I'm pretty pleased with the 3 Vivitar K-mount lenses I have. At one time, I had quite a few in various mounts, then sold most of them to finance other things.

Thanks Mike. The 50/1.7 is a nice little lens. I'm done with camera purchases for a while, but if I can find one at a reasonable price, I'm planning to get a 50/1.4 - or even a 50/1.2 if I can find one that's not out-of-this-world expensive.

Q7 & Birding

Well I've just spent the last several hours reading every post in this wonderful thread. I want to thank you all for your informative posts especially Larry (Mr. Q7DA*300)! I have learned sooo much from you all and you have changed my plans to buy the DA*300 plus the Pentax 1.4 teleconverter for my K3 to instead purchasing the DA*300 and a new Q7 and K to Q adapter. I can buy the Q7 and K to Q adapter for less than I can buy the Pentax 1.4 teleconverter. In fact I can just about add the Pentax Red dot for the same money as the teleconverter. My goal is to take wildlife pictures and financially the DA*300 and teleconvertor is what the budget would support at this point and the possibility of ever being able to afford a Sigma 500mm 4.5 with my first wife remaining my first wife isn't likely.... ;-) So thank you all again. Now I've got to figure out which color Q7 will take the best pictures............................

Bob
