There is no way I can ever think of shooting BIF with this setup, you are a beast Barondla!

Hello,
1st test with a Q7 + genuine adapter + my beloved FA*250-600mm

Got pretty high ISO results...
I used Av mode, kept the adapter on the 1-3 settings... can't control the shutter speed. I am just not sure how to setup my rig right now (and i do not want to read 15 pages on this thread... especially after half a bottle of good wine )
However, I've seen the advice from @vonBaloney to keep the SR on even on tripod... I'll try to increase the FL next time (I Used 600mm)
I also noticed that the SR seems to help...
also I found that weighted centered EV is better
I used focus peaking... but it's a real challenge under bright sunlight...
lots a fun though...

here are the results

"Hi, I saw your photos with the Q on the 560mm... great job
I just tried with my 250-600, and I just don't know how to setup the camera... did you used Av mode ?
I am getting pretty good shots , but they are all Hi iso (3200 iso for most),
also did you used SR ? It seems to me that it helps a bit... but not sure

if you have aother setings/ tips to share, I'd be happy to hear them !

thanks

Sylvain"

--------------------------------------------------------

I'm shooting TAv mode. It's a mode I find very intuitive - just vary the shutter speed and let the ISO float where it may.
After much experimenting I've found that I don't need SR. I think it might have to do with having a very robust stable mount.
The upper limits of my ISO seems to be in the 1600 -2000 range and typically around 800-1000. This is at a fixed aperture of f/7.1.
My shutter speed floats between 160 and 320.

Other then that i do pay particular attention to PP. With such a small sensor I always shoot RAW and take the time to get the final image right in Photoshop.
In fact to the extent my images have any merit it has as much to do with proper PP as anything else.

ok, thanks Wildman for the advices...
when you say it's a fixed aperture of f/7.1, do you mean that you use the aperture ring on the lens to fix it ? or in camera ?
TAv mode is not available on the Q7, do you mean Tv mode ?

The Q-K adapter has a Dial from 0 to 8... do you set this to something specific ?

I also have a very sturdy tripod... I try to test without SR then...
but as you say, Focusing is not easy under full sun...

I saw in this thread someone ( @pacerr ) has a nice hood on his Q

What is it exactly ? I'd need one like this...

Also Another issue I had, is that the display is dimmed (still open, but darker) after few seconds, I have not found where to change this settings in the menus ...

Thanks in advance for your advices !

Nice work. To control shutter speed use M mode.

Set battery save mode off to eliminate screen dim.
Set AF assist to x8 and use the OK button to magnify screen when focusing.
Get a hood loupe for a Nikon J1 on ebay.

---------- Post added 06-27-15 at 07:55 AM ----------

Just verified on the Dim - it is called Power Save in the tools menu.
Uncheck the box.
Also rather than SR if on a tripod use 2 sec delay to avoid shake.

I don't use a conventional photo lens but a scope so I have no aperture.

I only use a simple Q to T mount adapter.

BTW when I talked about the importance of pp I meant something like this:
RAW file with no PP and after PP

Do you also have a JPEG to show what the camera did with the same info?

No. I shoot RAW only.
The first one shows how Adobe Camera Raw, set at it's default settings before I do anything to the file, "sees" the RAW file.
The second one is after I run it through Photoshop CS6 extended.

Yes, I understand that. But, RAW files are known to look flat, so I would hope that the PP version would look better. The real goal should be to demonstrate that your work is noticeably better than what the camera does in creating a JPEG.

No that was not my goal but apparently you think it should have been.

So what was your goal?
I don't think anyone needed convincing that RAW pictures have issues which can be fixed in PP.

That PP can make an important contribution to the final quality of images beyond what can be accomplished in camera only - no more no less.

I found even when saving out of camera as jpg that PPing was essential. And felt the need to demonstrate this on the adapted lens thread.

Raw pictures don't have "issues" -- they are the true building block of the image , from which the camera does its best to create a jpg , and from which we also pp a tif and hopefully end up with a superior image.

I'm puzzled. RAW files have nothing done in camera only. They always need PP (whether by hand or by some photo editing software defaults). But judging by the quality of your photos, this is something you must know, so I can't make sense of your comment.

Hence why reh asked if wildman had JPGs to compare to.

And that's obviously what reh meant when he referred to issues. Of course they have issues. They have whatever issues the sensor, lens, and any other bits of the photo-taking coalition put there.

Tried out the DA*300 and the Q adapter this morning...just a quick test at the backyard..

There is a birdie sitting on the tree branch somewhere...taken with a 35mm lens on the K-3. This illustrate the distance away from the bird.

And here is the birdie shot after some PP

Getting a good focus is difficult and need plenty of patience and need to take many shots too.
