I would urge Pentax to develop focus-peaking for the Q, as this would help so much in this matter...
Hi, I hope you still have this lens How does it fare now with the Q's updated firmware?

It sure looks like a nice one... but I personally would pass, because:

1) The price. YOWZA! If I were going to drop $650 on a lens, it sure wouldn't be for the Q. Price-wise, that's Pentax Limited territory.
2) No leaf shutter. For that much money, I would insist on a mechanical shutter. The 06 is half the price, AF, has a shutter, and more versatile. For me, it would make MUCH more sense.

But, your mileage may vary and all that good stuff...

when this lens came out the 06 wasn't around yet... It remains a special case in Q-land as not any third-party manufacturer is likely to make a Q lens. But yeah in practical terms the 06 has more value for its price

And a Hyundai has more practical value for its price than a Maserati, but put the two in front of anyone and guess which they choose.

The Sonnetar does one thing I hoped people would "get" about the Q, which is to show that really fast aperture lenses for the small sensor don't need to be huge and won't need to be, proportionally, all that expensive. I was hoping this would open a little bit of a floodgate for low light shooters who got kits of cheap, ultra-fast primes that would turn the Q into something of a pocket rocket.

Oh well.

I've come across this lens bundled with the Pentax Q, 01 8.5 mm f/1.9, and 02 5-15 mm f/2.8-4.5 lenses for about $450. If I'm not mistaken, that's less than the market value of the Sonnetar 25 mm f/1.1 on its own. So very, very tempting...

Jump on it! At least even if you don't like it, you'll be able to get your money back out of it.

I just picked up the Q, 01, 02, and 25mm Sonnetar for $400 this evening. Charging the battery as I type this. That lens is such a gem!

Took the Q and Sonnetar for a quick spin around midnight. Wide open the lens is soft but perfectly usable; focusing is surprisingly easy with peaking enabled.

f/1.1, 1/80 s, ISO 125

f/1.1, 1/50 s, ISO 125

f/4, 1/100 s, ISO 125

100% crops:

Note that this web is almost perpendicular to the plane of focus; where the two intersect, sharpness is decent.

There may be a hint of motion blur here.

Stopped down to f/4; diffraction may have set in already.

Cross-posted from here. This shows the lens at its best, I think.

Q, f/1.1, 1/50 s, ISO 125

thanks for those samples! a tad bit sad though since it's a handmade special-production lens... I doubt the maker would sell the lens design to Pentax/Tamron/Sigma...
