Best value way to get extreme reach with reasonable IQ?

Any Q owners have any experience and/or suggestions?

I was thinking about a Q with a K adaptor and my 55-300 lens, but I read somewhere that diffraction would be a problem. Has any one tried this? If it's like photographing through jello, then it's obviously out. I don't want to go out and spend 300/F4 money, so was wondering what other ideas any of you may have.

Maybe I should just get a Nikon P510 (1000mm zoom) as it's only US$350 here in HK. The Olympus SP810 gets to 864mm for only US$230...

The Q does like to stay around f4-4.5 when possible. This doesn't mean it won't perform decently at f5.6. The super zooms you are looking at are bound by the same dffraction rules. Have never shot either of those big zoom cameras, but others I have shot are soft at max tele setting. They are using the same small sensor "trick" as the Q to get their reach. None have as big an opening as the Pentax DA55-300.

Pretty sure snostorm has posted DA55-300 images in this forum. They look good. I have both 300's and will try to shoot some with the zoom since my lens adapter now has a solid tripod foot. Unfortunately the summer heat is arriving and the atmosphere is starting to churn.

Think the Q will beat the big telezooms in quality with the DA 50-200 and DA 55-300. The 300 doesn't have to be used at 300 ( where its slowest) to match the big zoom cameras in reach.

Thanks for the info. I'll look up Snostorm's posts.

I am assuming SR doesn't work with K-mount lenses? Or is it like with my Lensbaby lenses on my K-x where the camera asks me to input a focal length?

Approx 1600mm without SR sounds problematic!

At the moment SR does not work with adapted lenses. There is hope that a firmware update will enable it- possibly in the future when Pentax releases their own Q>K adapter. It would be nice to have.

Have handheld 200( eq. 1000). Hard to get focus correct. Image moves around a lot. At 1650 doubt I could do it. Ultra tele shots are usually taken with a tripod no matter what camera. At least a monopod.

Q is best ultra tele bang for the buck out there. It allows so many shots you would not have otherwise.

thanks

While playing around with various on an adapter at a local shop, the owner handed me a nikkor 500mm mirror lens to try. Haha now that was extreme tele. Even at iso3200 in daylight I couldn't handhold it without a rolling shutter jello effect. That said, images looked surprisingly useable... Not quite as soft as the 50/1.8e I tried wide open, believe it or not. I'd think a 300 would be quite good. You will need a tripod..

A cheap 135mm f2.8 (of which there are MANY) will give you a bit under 750mm equivalent for probably $120 or less (including the adapter). If you can grab a good sharp lens you will not even need to worry about diffraction as you shouldnt need to stop down much if at all.

I knew RioRIco would have an answer. I still had to read the thread to see what it was.

Or maybe with some luck we'll get a 500mm lens Q mount sometime soon that would be cool. Hello Pentax.

Pentax Q DA 300 Setup

Hi folks,

I posted yesterday a foto of my now finished longe range setup with the Q and a DA 300.

Please have a look and comment on it.

It even works with a 1.5x or 2x converter for Moon Shots.
