Set the focal length to the actual focal length of the lens, i.e. 28-90mm. This will enable the body's SR system to work with your lens.
You will not get automatic aperture control. It needs to be set on the lens or the adaptor. Use whatever setting on the camera that gets the job done - you'll work it out.
Without the OEM Pentax adaptor, only the electronic shutter can be used.
thank you .. but please see my reply. am still like a mole on his way home?! IN THE DARK!

I thought my response was pretty clear, but I'll try to make it more so.

Set the camera to the actual focal length of the lens. If the lens is at the wide end, input 28mm into the camera. If the lens is at the telephoto end, input 90mm into the camera. If the lens is somewhere in between, enter something in between.

In my opinion, the Pentax adaptor is worth the extra money. It is beautifully engineered, has a nice aperture ring and most importantly, a built-in shutter.

Funny you should ask.
At this very moment there is a thread devoted to viewfinder: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/136-pentax-q/211706-q-viewfinder.html
(and, no, it is not an EVF)
