Q Focus Speed

Hey,

How is the focus speed on the Q? Digital Rev TV were critical of it - not that that means too much. However... Much lag? Also give small sensor size, how is zone focusing? I imagine that would be a good option given the large DOF. Has anyone tried zone focusing and street shooting?

Given the depth of field offered by the small sensor, I don't think the AF speed can be an issue in street shooting;
switch to manual focus, stop down to f5.6 and use the hyperfocal distance

A strength of the Q is the interchangeable lenses, so you could try finding some with good manual focusing. Also, I think there are videos of it on youtube, so maybe you could check that out

My main problem with "speed" on the Q isn't actually focus - the huge DOF makes it do that fairly quickly - but that it occasionally simply blocks when taking n photos in rapid succession, whilst writing the last photo to the SD card.

But, the focus speed is absolutely decent, without being lighting fast.

Hi jeztastic,

I felt that the AF was noticeably quicker with both the 01 prime and 02 zoom after the firmware updates to both the bodies and lenses. Reviews were mostly written before the update was offered, so may not be really indicative. There wasn't a huge difference, but I felt it was the difference between being a bit of a disappointment to not really an issue for outdoor lighting conditions.

I've been able to mostly keep up with a toddler, which is essentially near light speed... So it's good enough. You do have to be a little more deliberate. And shot-to-shot isn't the greatest. But it's ok, perfectly acceptable.
