Microphones

Haven't seen this mentioned, but it seems that the Q10 has a mono microphone v.s. the Q which several sources say has stereo, although some reviews say monophone for the Q as well.

Photos of the original Q show two microphone holes, and the Q10 shows one.

Good question. I don't actually have one but I checked the manual and it while it definitely shows two microphone holes, it also says sound is monoaural.

Mono audio on the Q

The specs do say that it's mono only. Even though there are two holes on the base of the camera, I guess they both channel the sound to a single mic element.

Having said that, I've found that I haven't noticed much difference in the audio quality. My previous Pentax video experience has been with a K7 and an external mic (ATR-6250) and the sound on the Q is as good if not better than anything I've shot with the K7. For background info, I'm usually shooting video of bands in iffy lighting. Here are some examples:

Pentax K7 & ATR 6250 external mic

Pentax Q & Internal Mic

Not a lot of difference for the type of things I'm shooting.

The Q holds up pretty well. Were you up close to the band? I'm surprised there is no distortion.
I was about 10 to 15 feet away. I was shooting with the 01 prime. I was very surprised by how well the camera handles loud audio without distortion...it's a pretty amazing
camera....

Thanks for sharing, that was freaking awesome! I'm a fairly frequent show-goer, and have been a "taper" for years, I'm taking my Q along next time. Great stuff.

Wow! I've heard semi-pro and "professional" that sound way worse. Also but using a mic like this gives a much more live feeling to the shots than soundboard recordings.

I'm hearing stereo in both recordings. Listen to the audience.

I guess the point to take away from this is the audio on the Q is very good...at least in these examples. Unless they've really changed the design drastically, I would expect the Q10 to be just as good if not better.

Looks like the Q10 only has one microphone, rather than two. Hopefully they'll change that before release.

The Q absolutely records in stereo.

Try it yourself. Point the camera at something, start the recording and clap first on one side of the Q then the other.

Play it back on your computer and experience the rich stereophonic sounds.

I just tried it and can hear the left/right directionality. I guess someone goofed on the specs.
