Good news!

I can get the flash to fire at every setting from full power down to 1/256 power.
This could be quite handy, but the flash is bigger than the camera!
Just tried it too, with my Metz 58 AF-2 and Yongnuo YN560 last night. Performance is similar, works in servo mode but not in the regular slave. Syncs with the built-in flash as the trigger and the Metz ignores any preflash. 1/2000s wireless is awesome, though the most I'll probably do with it is around 1/500~1000.

Tried it with the YN RF-602 trigger. It seems the trigger (or the camera) limits anything it doesn't detect as P-TTL in the hotshoe to 1/250s. Wish I had a Cactus V5

Hi Eric,

It might be possible to fashion very lightweight fiber optic extensions for the popup flash to get more reliable triggering of optical slaves if the remotes don't need to be too far away from the camera.

A possible source of lightweight flexible fiber optic bundles that would be usable for this might be your dentist as they use fiber optics for their high speed handpieces and the hoses (with their integral fiber optic bundles) need to be replaced regularly, mostly because of air leaks, so the fiber optics are usually intact.

I have considered this as a possibility, and obtained a few free fiber optic bundles from my dentist, but haven't implemented it because I haven't found the need yet.

That is a very cool idea! Please report back if you get a chance to try it out. If you need some inspiration on what's possible with fast sync speeds, check these blog posts by David Hobby:

Is it possible to use a hot shoe to PC cable adapter to trigger studio flashes at 1/2000 sync on the Q?

I don't believe it is possible.
When I put anything (Pt-04 wireless trigger, AF540FGZ) on the hot shoe the Q will not trigger the hotshoe higher than 1/250 sec.
Once you go to 1/320 and beyond it does not trigger.
