Pentax Q sales in Japan

This story over on PetaPixel has a sales ranking for mirrorless cameras In Japan which shows the Q at number 6. Unfortunately I don't know what time period the list covers, but in any case sixth is a pretty good effort and hopefully means that the Q system is more than just an oddity.

Very interesting; those numbers must be fairly new and not cover a long period as the E-PL5 just came out, and I'm sure it will outsell the E-PL3 as stock drops of that camera.

Did Pentax Japan slash prices on the Q's in anticipation of the Q10 arrival (as occurred here in the US), or is this indicative of a sustained selling pattern? I'd hope for the latter, but expect the former.

In any case, nice to see it on the list at all!

A bit sad to see the EOS-M already #3, this world is doomed.

Isn't it at 7? But good. Over here it wasn't even marketed, maybe it was different in Japan, but considering the quality and reputation of the cameras above it, its a good number.
Except for the Canon M, that thing is getting poor reviews.

I don't know if you are interested but here is a TV slot for the new Q10. It was in the middle of a popular cooking show.

In this image you can follow market share in Japan of mirrorless cameras in 2012, month by month.

Legend (from top to bottom lines):

Tan/gray: Olympus
Brown: Panasonic (with a drop towards the end of the year)
Yellow: Nikon
Blue: Sony (with the rise towards the end of the year)
Green: Pentax (hovering between 5 and 10 percent, with a slight rise in October)
Gray: Fujifilm (the one barely above 0)
Red: Canon (what a rise in September and October!)

By the way, that's a huge change in the market since August...

Thanks grillo.

Interesting, we can see that the EOS-M eats directly into the NEX sales and accelerates panasonic way down, whereas Pentax is not affected. Maybe the Q was a smart move after all...

Yes, that is interesting. Q actually managed to take shares from everybody except Canon and remember that Q is quite old compared to the Canon.

I think that it should also be considered that this is a comparison of units sold, and the Q is a relatively low production number model. At introduction, Pentax said that they projected @ 25,000 units per month. 300K units/yr might sound like a lot, but not in a world -wide market that sells over 100 million total compact cameras in a year. I would think that total production for the Q is very low compared to the other models from most of the other manufacturers. A comparison of sales to production ratio for each of these models would be enlightening, but don't think we'd ever see that.

That's great! #7 is far better than I would have imagined.

I hope that fairly decent sales volume will drive another magnesium model... I just love the feel.
