Walimex pro 800mm f/8 for Pentax Q

Anyone tried this lens ?

It would make a 4400mm on the Q

Initial concerns are:
no provision for a tripod if the lens mounts natively to the Q, as it looks kind of heavy to be hanging off the camera tripod mount
fixed F8 is in the diffraction zone, although others are producing decent images at this f stop

If one was available I'd try it, though I'm already finding sometimes the DA*300 is too close at 1650mm.

Not with the Q but those lenses need a LOT of light. They are very light weight and will put less strain on the mount than would a M80-200 or K/M/A 300 for example.

And add a 2x converter!
But seriously, the quality of that lens is probably not great (considering its cost), and it is very dark (f8). It would be hard to focus and even harder to take a well-exposed shot without noise, because you would need a really long shutter time and high ISO. But it would be an interesting experiment.

I wouldn't recommend it for the Q.

I don't have a Q but I do have the Samyang version of that lens which I used to use with my K-r. It is not sharp enough even for the much larger pixels that the K-r has. I have to apply a lot of sharpening to get a half decent image. In fact I find that the actual 'reach' of this lens is only slightly better than my Tamron 18-250 5.6-6.3. In other words if I digitally magnify a photo shot with the 18-250 to match the image of the Samyang there is almost as much detail in the Tamron photo as the Samyang 800mm and the image quality is still much better despite the digital magnification.

With the much smaller pixels on the Q's sensor I think you will get an exceedingly soft image which no amount of sharpening will be able to fix.

I think you will be much better off buying a shorter but higher quality prime lens and magnifying it digitally in PP. Given that my Tamron zoom at 250 is already almost as good as the 800 Samyang I think a decent 300mm prime could easily exceed it by far.

I haven't used the 800mm in a long time as I had since then bought a Sigma 150-500 zoom. The rach of this lens is not even comparable , despite it having a much shorter focal length but then it does cost 5 times as much so I wouldn't expect otherwise.

Even though the lens is an F8, it actually transmits less light due to the central obstruction. I know where a similar lens is and may have to try it on the Q. As crewl1 pointed out a 300 is often too much with the Q.

Lister6520, you need a Q for that Sigma zoom! It is a great digital teleconverter and a lot of fun.
thanks
