Q 01 prime VS Q 02 zoom image comparison

I shot these two pictures, one with the 01, the other with the 02. I thought I'd put the result I got here.

Before someone notices, I have not used the same focal length on both shots, so it might be something I will try for a future post. Nevertheless I thought that the result shows how much softer the image taken with the zoom is. It was quite obvious, even on the camera's display.

The complete images, side by side:

Thanks for the comparison. As a new Q owner I only have the 8.5 right now. I've read some comments that the 02 lens is a bit soft but hadn't seen any side-by-side comparisons before, so thanks.

@mamethot:

Nice to know, so to speak.
I didn't realize that there was such a difference in sharpness between the 01 vs. the 02 but your images really show it.

One wonders if this softness is inherent to the lens itself and can it be improved at all?
If this is a "nothing-you-can-do-about-it" situation, I might as well sell the 02 (got it with the 01 as a 2 lens kit with the Q).

One question - do you have the firmware updated for each lens in your Q?

You should do the comparison at the same focal length (and F-stop). When we tested the Q and its lenses for the forum the 01 and 02 performed almost identically.

Ole, all

Agreed, I should have had the same focal length in both situations. I will repeat the experiment soon.

The 01 lense was 8.5mm (of course) and f/2.8
The 02 lense was 13.2mm f/4

ISO 125 for both.

The firmware is updated on both lenses and using 1.10 on the body.

I agree that comparison tests have to carried out in controlled conditions, with as little variation in parameters as possible, in order to be meaningful.

Having said that, I think we all realise that a zoom is going to be a compromise somewhere in its range, if not a number of places. By its very nature, it has to be. Admittedly, the compromises can be fewer than in the past, due to computer-integrated design and manufacture (tighter manufacturing tolerances), and due to newer materials (low-dispersion glasses) and processes (aspherical lens manufacture). The same advantages, of course, accrue to modern single FL lenses, but the gap has clearly narrowed.

I have a Q with the 01 and 02 lenses, and I have to say that, subjectively, I continue to be pleased with the IQ from both, but the 02 requires more distortion correction, for a start, so the 01 lens stays on the body by default.

Hi,

The intent wasn't to compare or evaluate precisely. That's why similar conditions were quite enough.

They are a couple of shots (in the example above) that were taken in similar conditions (or so I thought ) when the foggy/soft picture from the 02 caught my eye.

After someone mentioned the focal length in the thread, I have to admit that the conditions were not similar and the comparison is unfair.

So I went away and tried a couple of pictures and I agree that at the same focal length (8.5mm) the difference is hard to tell.

I was able to reproduce the smooth result at 14.9mm as seen below. It showed the 02 limitations/compromise quite obviously. I am not overly criticizing or bashing the product, but just sharing my observations and a little disappointment. Even though it's a "compromise" I would have expected a better result than the one I had.

Larger size here.

Again, not bashing, just saying. I like the system and enjoy it everyday but if like me you wished the 02 was your all around lens, it is not.

Thanks for the test. I was thinking of getting the 02 lens. Maybe I will just hold it and just get the 06 lens.

One thing I notice is that the 06 is f2.8 for its entire range, the 02 is f2.8/f4.5. I have to try different appertures to see if the result is the same...

Mine 02 isn't like that at all. It's pretty sharp at all focal lengths.

I seem to get decent results with my 02 as well. If I have time I'll try to do a comparison from here.

Thanks. This thread has me thinking about what other lens(es) to get for the Q. I've pretty much decided on the 03 Fisheye but the 02 is one I am on the fence about.
