Why are they testing the normal zoom out of focus?

Seems like it is much sharper than the 02 zoom lens too !
Very interesting.

Being in focus tends to give that impression. I'm with VisualDarkness on this, the 02 is obviously misfocused. (This could be related to if the zooms are parfocal or not, but they should focus for the longer length if it isn't, and they clearly haven't.)

Even the tele zoom gets slightly out of focus (look at bright light sources). I call bull on that test and there's probably a reason why the comments have been disabled.

When I received the Q kit with two lenses (01 and 02), I tried the zoom right away and, frankly, was disappointed in its performance vs. the 01 prime.
Quite a BIG difference, actually.

Likely, I will dispose of the 02 zoom lens in the near future and wait for some reviews of the 06.

I don't think that was meant to be an optical test, just a comparison of fields-of-view. Otherwise I might be concerned that the 06 blows highlights at a higher rate than the other lenses. :-)

I do wonder why they didn't notice & fix the focusing before bothering to post.

I think there is an excellent chance though that the 06 might be a little sharper than than the 02 -- because at f/4.5 (02 long end) Q's tiny sensor's high photosite density is already starting to suffer the effects of diffraction -- but the 06 will be able to shoot this and longer at f/2.8 which will help.

I haven't really used my zoom but one problem is that the slow aperture throws it right into the diffraction zone. So the lens can actually be supersharp optically but it will never reach that in practice.

You might consider returning it to Pentax; I would have agreed, given the performance of my first coy of the Q zoom. However, I bought a 2nd Q kit, and the second copy of the 02 is MUCH better. I have yet to contact Pentax about it, myself, but I plan to.

I will contact the seller today (Henry's photo in Toronto); they are usually quite good with returns.

Thanks for the reply.

Did you see the my comparison shots I posted in this thread? There really shouldnt be that much dif between the 01 and 02, you may have a bad sample.
