Pentax Q With Infrared Filter

I have received my Q from the ShopNBC deal and I am so far really enjoying it. It is incredibly small and you don't realize how small it is until you hold it in your hand. Anyway... I am looking for more creative ways to use mine and was wondering... has anyone used any 40.5mm infrared filters with the 02 zoom lens on the Q?

Thanks!

Hi Deadvacahead,

Quite a while ago,I briefly tried a Hoya R72 (I have a step up ring, but just held the filter in front of the lens to see how it worked) with the 01 prime. The LCD was very usable since it gains up so I could frame easily, but the shutter speed was a bit slow -- even at a higher (but usable) ISO -- I can't remember the particulars at this time -- In any case, it's definitely doable, but not particularly sensitive to IR, so a tripod would probably be the best bet in most cases.

Hey Scott,

Thanks for the reply! I didn't even think about how the infrared filter would affect the LCD view of the image. Thanks for bringing that to my attention as that is something I need to be aware of. I think I'm going to buy a cheap one to play around with and see how things go. After all... I'm starting to think the Q excels in experimentation and hopefully I can get some interesting pics. I wonder if anybody is ever going to do a sensor conversion for the Q to make it solely an infrared cam. Could be interesting.

Or make it full spectrum and change the ND filter in the lens to be either a hot mirror or an IR pass filter.

Have been looking at getting a camera IR converted ( not the Q ). One of the many places I checked listed the Q. I so wish Pentax would offer an IR converted Q. And a monochrome Q. Be like buying a 3 pack of cameras.
thanks

I use a B&W 092 IR phi 40.5mm on my 01 prime with good results. I have yet to try it on my 02 zoom, though, I'm sure it would work just as well. I shot Av mode at ISO 125, f4 with shutter speeds between 1/8th to 1 sec. on a tripod. If I get the knack of IR photography with the Q, I may get my Kx converted.

one of my first attempts:
