How much worse IQ does the 02 have, really? I love fast primes -- my SMC-F 50mm f1.7 is my favorite lens by far, but it seems I have to pay $300+ for a demo model or $250 for a used model to get that combo, and from eBay at that. (Which means if I have a problem with the camera I'm shit out of luck). I can get it with the 02 brand new for $300 from a large, reputable retailer. (meaning returns and exchanges should be no problem).

I shouldn't have waited so long... argh.

I'd like to know this too! I have the 02 zoom kit, just received it from ShopNBC ($246) and so far I find the 02 plenty sharp! I've been shooting with it wide open at all focal lengths and the color rendition, sharpness and overall IQ appear top notch to me.

I have seen tons of great examples online though of what others have done with their 01 prime though and I'd really like to add one. Hopefully soon Pentax will offer that lens by itself for around $100. That's where these lenses ought to be priced!

Even the 02 lens with the upgraded firmware is good in low light

it is not just that, 02 is very fine lens, I just picked up 06 which again is excellent performer.
the point is that the Q with 01 is very addictive, the perfect kit,
and with the cute metal aluminium hood it is just orgasming...........

It really isn't that bad. Consider that the "kit lens" for most other Pentax interchangeable lens cameras is the DA 18-55 (or DAL, or WR), and it is a very good performer. Most independent reviews say that it is about the best "cheap kit zoom" from any manufacturer. However, the DA 18-55 isn't going to beat a prime... even a 40 year old one.

The 02 lens is kind of like any other Pentax kit lens in that regard, except that there is only one prime to beat it. So it isn't as sharp or as fast as the 01 prime, but still a very good lens and sometimes much more flexible. IMHO, one of the big advantages to the 5-15mm range is the wide angle at 5mm. If you keep the distortion correction on in the camera (on by default), the resulting images are quite nice and wider than anything other than the 03 fisheye. Definitely useful!

Well, I bit the bullet and ordered the shopnbc kit. At that price, it was impossible not to buy. I might keep my eye on eBay for an 01 lens (or kit) for a reasonable price, but for right now... I think I'll order an adapter and use my F50mm f1.7

Congrats on the purchase! I think you'll be very pleased!

Should be lots of fun with that 50mm 1.7. It'll be a 275mm (35mm equivalent) on the Q!
