Pentax Q Firmware Update

Hello,

Two firmware updates for the Q are out. Do I have to install both or will the older update be included if I only update with the latest firmware?

EDIT: and can upload more than one firmware to the SD card and install them in one sitting?

Dom

The newest update will include previous updates so you only have to install one per item.

That said, don't forget that the Q has updates for the 01 and 02 lenses as well. They can only be installed with the lens is on the camera (so you have to do two installs if you own both lenses).

You got me all confused now. There are two firmware:

(i) OLD: 1.01 (+ the lens 01 & 02 firmware)
(ii) NEW: 1.10

1.10 should include 1.01, shouldn't it? And given that I have two Qs plus the 01 and 02 lenses, will it not suffice
that I upload 1.10 to both cameras?

Dom,

Install v1.1 and it will have everything in it you need for the camera.

The Q, unlike any other Pentax cameras, ALSO has firmware for the lenses. So, you have to upload firmware specifically for each of the lenses because they have shutters inside them and have their own firmware in addition to the firmware for the Q camera itself.

So - install v1.1 on each of your 2 Q cameras.

Then, install the new firmware for your 01 on each Q WHILE the 01 is attached to that Q.

Then, repeat the above with the 02 firmware for each Q WHILE the 02 lens is attached to that Q.

6 installations in all - 2 firmware for Qs (1 each) and 4 lens installations.

v1.1 for the Q camera is here:

Firmware update for 01 Standard Prime Lens is here:
http://www.pentax.jp/english/support/digital/q_lens_s.html

Firmware update for 02 Zoom lens is here:
http://www.pentax.jp/english/support/digital/q_lens_s.html

fwlq101.bin (260Kbytes) is for the 01 STANDARD PRIME
fwlq102.bin(260Kbytes) is for the 02 STANDARD ZOOM

Thank you Docrwm.
By the way, did you notice any differences through these lenses FW updates ?

V1.1 adds focus peaking, among other changes, so that one is pretty obvious. I have only owned my Q about a month so 1.1 was already out and I only shot <100 photos with 1.0.

I just updated FW1.10 to my Q. Does anyone remember if the Q can be turn off High ISO Noise Reduction with the FW1.0?

Now with FW1.10, I cannot turn off the NR. Just only choosing between weak or strong reduction.

I played with Q just a couple hours before updating the FW. And I think I saw that NR can be trun off. My memory could be wrong, though.

p.s. Focus peaking doesn't seem useful as in Sony NEX, IMO.

Don't remember it ever being possible to turn NR off. Only weak or strong.
Enjoy your new Q! It is a blast.
thanks

2 questions!

1. What ISO is the first that NR will be active?

I used at 3200 and see that NR removed so much detail from the pictures.

2. How to adjust and store the My1, My2, My3 in Cross Process tab of Custom Image?

Thank you so much!

Hi zany 225,

To the first question, barondla is correct, with the Q the only settings for NR have always been a choice between Auto, low, or high, "off" has never been an option.

My impression is that NR is always active to some degree, at all ISO -- at 3200, the detail lost is really probably mostly due to noise, and not necessarily the NR alone. This is a very small sensor, and the high ISO performance is really quite remarkable when this is kept in mind, IMO.

The Myx Favorite settings for Cross Processing are saved on the Playback Mode screens. Use the Random Cross Processing mode and take a number of shots. Play them back, and when you see one you like, you can save it as a Myx Favorite from that screen (Pg 134 in the Manual)

Enjoy your Q!

fwlq102.bin(260Kbytes) is for the 02 STANDARD ZOOM

So if you want to sapw Q lenses or use a K lense you have to update the firmware each time?

Sounds complicated.

No just one time.

So if my camera came with the Zoom lens then I need to update the Firmware o support it and it will support other K lenses as well? To me it seems much more easier to just have one firmware update that covers all lenses.

I'm still a little confused about this. I think that a firmware update dedicated for a lens will not work as well on other lenses.
