Pentax Q Power Up Issue

Hi All,

Having just purchased a Pentax Q with a 01 Prime Lens, I have an issue, every 7/8 power ups the camera freezes on a blank screen, you cannot switch off but have to remove the battery, remove lens, replace battery, switch on camera replace lens. Has anyone else experienced this or is this a lemon. Needless to say camera is being returned but I would like to buy another one without this problem. Oh and did put the new firmware on.

Thanks Ash

Sorry to hear about your problem with your new Q. No, I haven't had that problem under either firmware. I don't recall reading about it here either.

My Q has only frozen once, and that was right after taking a shot (which was actually saved before crashing). I think it's safe to say that the average Q does not freeze often.

Thanks for your replies, glad to know I can get another one, found it an awesome little camera, images were not that far from my Pentax K-30 with 35mm prime lens.

Same here as above - no problems like this and have never read about anything like it. We have quite a lot of active Q owners here so if this was a common problem it probably would have been posted by now.

I know you said the camera is being returned, but just for a little off-the-hip troubleshooting.....

Were you using the genuine Pentax battery? Funny things happen sometimes with generic/aftermarket batteries.
Was the battery low on charge when this happened? If battery is low, during startup, the camera may feel it can not finish the procedure due to not enough battery power.
Have you tried a different SD card? When the camera powers up it is reading the card - any faults in the card or file system can cause a hang.

In any event, I would feel very comfortable with getting a Q replacement.

I did try all these thanks, full battery, different SD Cards etc, different Firmware, it just seems the lens throws the camera into a complete freeze when attached, without it is 100% fine.

Good - glad you tried a few things to try to narrow down the problem.

I hope you have the confidence to get a replacement - these little cameras are a lot of fun!

I've not had this problem with the Q. My 06 zoom arrived dead, wouldn't focus AF or MF, but the replacement has been fine. These Q lenses have more electronics in them, which increases DOA like all electronics. That said, they appear to pretty solid performers when they don't have the rare factory failure.

Have fun with your replacement

You updated firmware on the lens as well?

I sure did, and tried lens before camera then the other way round just to make sure if it made a difference. It is sadly a defect lens I imagine.

I do have this issue. (Got my Q last March. ) All firmware updated, fresh batteries, different cards, still happens every now and then. A quick jab on the start button rather than holding the button down is usually more reliable for me. According to the manual, static electricity can cause this problem and keeping the battery out for about a minute solves it. So, once the camera is on I don't keep turning it on and off during a session. Apart from this, I love the camera and the results compare reasonably well with my K7 and K01 with my Limiteds . I have taken up to about two thousand pictures with my Q.

I have this problem on occasion too. It has frozen with the 01 prime but also with adapted lenses. It seems it gets confused on power up on if it should bring up the lens focal length screen or not that it does when using adapted lenses on power up.

Huh - never thought of holding the button down - I've always just touched the button ever so briefly to turn it on or off.
