attaching strap from retro case

The Pentax Q leather retro case has been discounted at several places, so I picked up one from B&H. It is said that the case will only fit with the 01 prime or the 03 fisheye lens. My fisheye lens has not arrived in the post yet, but I can confirm that the case will NOT fit the 01 if you have a filter attached. Maybe it would if it were a thin filter, but I have no idea if 40.5mm filters are available in thin configuration. It probably would fit with the filter, but not with the cap at the same time, (I have the pinch cap on for the time being, and will replace it with the DA40 style hood/cap when it arrives 'any day now'.)

Secondly, the strap is too wide to fit into the Q slots. It is about a millimeter wider than the OEM strap that came with the body. There are two 'rings' attached to the leather strap, but I was reluctant to use them; as I remember the same system scratching the body of my old K1000. The K7 and K5 have little leather flaps that when attached first, keep the rings from scratching the body. No such leather flaps were included with the Q case, but there was a little leather fob saying 'genuine leather'. At first, I thought that I might cut that in half and punch the appropriate holes to make my own flaps. I gave that up because I don't have leather working tools and the scrap sample piece is probably not large enough to make two flaps.

The strap will not fit, (easily), as is, into the body slots, so this is what I did to get it to go in. I took scissors and cut the end to about a 45 degree angle. Then, pushed the pointy end through as far as it will go and used a pair of needle nose pliers to grab that little triangular piece that showed through the slot and muscle the strap all the way through. Then, I cut off the badly frayed end so ti was again square and ran it under a lit match to fuse the loose threads together. It's a nice end now. Then, wrap and lock the strap as normal.

Hopefully this will help someone else who might purchase the retro case and wonder just how to get the strap attached to the body.

Have the same case/strap. Love the strap. Some observations:

The 01 lens/ Pentax inverted hood, fits case with screw in metal lens cap. It will not fit if a filter is added to the hood.

The original leather strap is my favorite way to carry the Q. Like volosong, I didn't want to scratch the Q. It is a @#$%&% to put the strap on the camera without using the extra rings. Finally used precision flat blade screw driver blade to shove the strap thru the body eyelets. Took 15+ minutes to thread. Only time I have ever cursed the Q!

Have to monitor the strap, because the "buckles" have slippage at times, and the ends have almost come free. The strap fits the Q so tight, it might not fall unless a big adapted lens is attached. Need to find a way to make buckles grip the slick strap better.

Love how small the strap folds up to carry in a pocket.
thanks

The mailman was late today. Just got back home from dinner with my lady friend and the DA40 style inverted lens hood was in the mail. barondla is correct in that the case fits fine with the DA40 style hood, but no filters. Oh well. I use filters mostly for protection from my fat fingers and the inverted style hood goes a long way in that type of protection.

Next, to verify that the case will fit with the fisheye attached. Just checked UPS tracking and my fisheye is due to be delivered by eod Monday.

Then, to figure out how to protect the extra lenses when not on the camera. The package of my new Manfrotto micro folding tripod includes a nice little, draw-string, red bag that works perfectly for the 02 lens. It sort of works for the 06 also, but that's a tight fit. Anybody get the Manfrotto and don't want to keep the bag? I'll purchase it from you.

I ended up using volosong's scissors method, but the strap looks cool on the Q.
