Scott these are really good, the first one especially.
There is no way I could hand hold my da*300 with the Q.
A smaller 300 like the 55-300 sounds promising.
My tests with my Tamron 70-300 were disappointing, primarily due to the purple fringe at open apertures, but also I was shooting at distant targets and the resolution was just not there.
These birds look to be fairly close - do you have some samples of objects or birds, say, around 30 -50 yards away?

That is very impressive Scott. I just can't believe the detail you are getting hand held at that focal length! I know it takes practice, and that is what I need to do since it is finally starting to get warmer here also.

And thanks for providing the details of the lens and camera settings.

You've renewed my faith in the Q and long lenses!

Hi Larry,

The farthest I shot this time was about 60-70 feet (I'm not really good at distance estimation. . .) Here are the shots -- same PP -- easily good enough for ID shots, but nothing to get excited about. I'd say that the DA 55-300 optics are good enough for excellent resolution to about 25-30 feet with the Q, then it starts to fall apart, but not really that badly. For me at least, longer shots need even faster shutter speeds since the linear deflection for a given angular movement increases with distance, and the slower max aperture hurts the zoom probably as much as the lower max resolution. At f8, the resolution might be there, but shutter speeds and higher ISO would get in the way. For everyday carry around though, this set up is easily good enough for my purposes. For $250-$300 on the used market, I'd buy one if I didn't already have one, and I find myself actually considering a used DA L 55-300 just for the Q (they've been complaining about having to share with the K-5s)

I don't shoot too many long shots (normally I shoot under 20 feet), but I'm thinking that if I do run across a situation where this is needed, then one of the premium lenses on a tripod would probably be the best way to go.

I shot these trying to see why these bushes were so popular with the Sparrows. There were probably 20 or 30 perched there most of the afternoon. Those long thorns are probably very good protection against the Cooper's and Red Tailed Hawks that frequent this area. . .

Scott

Schneider Kreuznach Cinegon 6.5mm f/1.9 D-mount

Need to add a thin paper to between lens and adapter to get proper infinity. If it is not added, lens can focus pass infinity.
Without washer, lens can still get sharp image with proper focus.

Actually, without information about the distance involved, one can't fully assess the performance of the lenses. That is why I shot at various ranges from six to twelve miles. One has to make allowances for the distances involved, and compare them to the same lens being used on a larger format. After all, the outstanding feature of the Q is it's pulling distance, so it is interesting to see just how far and how well it pulls. One needs to compare the alternatives. Here is a comparison I found on Flicker.

This is the comment below the pictures:
The picture with the Q ist the left one.
In both cases a DA* 300 was used.
This means even an expensive tele lens like the new pentax da 560 cannot beat the Pentax Q / DA 300 combo !!!!

Hi All,

Though there's still a lot of snow on the ground, it warmed up enough the past few days for me to get in some early spring practice with the DA 55-300 handheld.

Scott
Great shots Scott, I see I have a lot of room for improvement of my hand holding with the 55-300, Great detail even wide open. Looks like a better shutter speed trumps stopping down a little.

You are crazy good with extremely long lenses! Though I guess the weather has to be really good to not suffer from turbulence or similar?

thanks guys...yes sometimes you can feel the wind moving things (not to mention the birds in the tress ) but many times i open my windows and shoot with the camera sticking out so that helps alot...the birds don't notice me as much so gives me a little time to get the focus as best as i can

Awesome work Amy! Are you using a tripod or monopod? With 2750mm at your disposal I guess using the house as a blind is possible
