What setting are best for adapted lenses or is it best to leave Q on auto?

Thank you,

Here is an exploded view photo of the setup to use enlarger lens. The need for the helicoid tube is to provide focussing as of course enlarger lens have no focus movement. So the issue is to get the arrangement short enuf to achieve infinity focus. That is easy enough with the 75mm lens and if fact it needs the short extension tube included. But the other 50mm lens I wish to use won't quite get to infinity so I am buying a short (12mm) Helicoid. The camera mount is a D mount / Q adapter with the female thread of an extension tube bonded to it. Having this short as possible is critical. The Travegar lens with its mount is in the foreground. Because of the way its adapted mount is recessed it achieves infinity on this set up.
Wow that looks like it took some engineering talent to figure out. Nice work.

Nice shot. I shoot in M mode so I can control the shutter speed and ISO myself.
The aperture can be controlled by the lens or the adapter depending on type.
Sweet spot is usually trial and error and I would not leave it up to the camera in auto to figure it right.

Larry, I saw your shots over in the "300mm lens" thread. Super sharp. Do you have some sort of focusing aid? I was shooting with my Q plus the 135mm Sakar pictured above, and could barely see the screen in the sunlight. I'm tempted to carry a towel with me to throw it over my head and the camera to kill the glare. I considered a loupe, but that sort of defeats the purpose of the Q. Perhaps a pop-up shade?

Meopta Anaret s 4.5/50 Enlarger lens

This is a 39mm mount enlarger lens. Mounted to Q as per photo in post "630"
I seem to remember Meopta was a fairly good quality enlarger lens. The results on the Q are excellent.
Images are either wide open or 5.6. Saved as Jpeg and PPed in Gimp. A lens hood was used. I have cut and pasted a section of the unimproved native jpeg on the image to demonstrate changes made. These lens do not appear to have coatings but the contrast can easily be stepped up

The results on the Q are great. I think these enlarger lens are going to be great for portraiture and close up work.

This SFC lens just did not feel quite as good as the Meopta and Astron lens I tested. It is still pretty good though.

Pentax SMC M 40mm f2.8

The poor old pancake 40mm gets quite a poor score in the reviews-- 7.5 but I have always liked it as a competent lens. So far it is the sharpest of all the older lens I have tried on the Q. And I am pleasantly surprised at the bokeh it throws up from time to time.( Must be wide open)
I deliberately took some similar images to the 50mm Meopta enlarger lens I reviewed to compare bokeh.
Images taken from 2.8 to f8.
Lenshood on and a uv-ir cut filter.

Cosmicar 25mm C-mount Television Lens. This is a 1:1.8 single aperture lens. Photos aren't too shabby for a rainy, overcast afternoon, although they are a bit soft and glowy. The feeder was swarming with birds earlier in the day, but I was using my Sony NEX at the time. The loupe is a handy little gadget; I just received it yesterday. It did make manual focusing a bit easier.

Pentax K 55mm f1.8

This is one cranky lens to get an acceptable image out of. I am not sure whether it is just my lens or typical of the model. When the focus and exposure are spot on it is good enough. Any over exposure and flare issues come in.
Just a lens hood on. Saved as Jpeg and PPed in Gimp. A section of the original jpeg is cut and pasted on the image so show pp improvement.

Pentax M42 super tak 1:2.8/105

This nice old lens puts out a reasonable image that responds well to post processing in Gimp.
I have used it between 2.8 and f5.6 with a lenshood and uv-ir cut filter.
Given the older coatings I was surprised it handled the sunset so well. Of course keeping it under-exposed helped

Carl Zeiss Jena Tessar f4.5/40mm M42

This is a 1950's vintage lens. I seem to remember that I had to spin a little of the back off it in a lathe to clear the mirror of my old spotmatic.
It is capable of good results but is a bit hit and miss in the focus department.
I had a hood and uv-ir cut filter on and worked from f4.5 to 5.6.
Its bokeh is quite fussy compared to the M40mm pancake and the enlarger lens.

Pentax SMC Takumar f1.8/55mm

This lens is supposed to be similar to the K version but my one is superior-- I think my K 55mm is not too hot.
A pleasant lens to use. Not a bad result for a very moderately priced lens.
I am using mine with the adapter I built for the enlarger lens ( post 630) and the helicoid tube. It means I have built in macro extension which is quite handy.
Lenshood on and uv-ir cut filter.

Q7 with SMC-F 80-200

Q7 and the Pentax OEM adapter with SMC-F 80-200 lens. Lens stopped down to F8 shot at ISO 100 First a Limpkin then a small Blue Heron in mating plumage in a small canal. Shots processed in LR 5. I got about 25% keepers using peaking and a LCD eyepiece hood The lens is available on Ebay, got mine for $20 and it is quite sharp on the Q and Q7 All shots bwtween 80 and 200mm (940mm) hand held This lens lives on my adapter
