Canon EF 70-300 f4-5.6 II Ultrasonic

I got a free lens from my brother an auto focus Canon consumer grade 70-300 zoom, not rated all that great on some of the sites. Shot @ 300mm hand held with a Fotodiox EOS-P/Q adapter (not painted flat black inside). I shot it at f6.3, 1 stop closed down. It is not as good as the DAL 55-300 but usable. I will paint the adapter and post any improvement. I am sure it would look better if my tripod were used but that's 1200 miles away.

Hans

Edit: Shot on monopod with painted adapter I got the best images at f8. An overall rating from best to poor of my 300mm zooms Best DAL 55-300, middle Tamron 70-300 poor Canon 70-300 still usable but if you have a better 300mm lens then why use the Canon. I have to agree with Scott the Pentax 55-300 both DA and DAL work very well on the Q.

Edit: One down side to the EOS lenses is you need a EOS body to change the aperture before you can put it on the adapter. Having an old cheap film EOS I had to set the aperture I wanted in manual then shoot at a 10 sec. shutter speed and remove the lens before the shutter closed. Once set @ f8 it will stay @ f8 until you put it back on a EOS body.

First is 1.4, then 2.8, then 5.6, then f8. Camera was on 2s shutter delay and mounted on a tripod.
Interesting. Obviously diffraction is not a problem at f8. Theoretically, maybe, but judging from this not in real life. Seems more important to find the sweet spot aperture of the lens without thinking about theoretical diffraction problems with the small sensor. I'm waiting for my adapter to arrive soon and will experiment myself.

I think he meant the tripod is 1200 miles away

Reference point is turning the ring until it stops (at the N in OPEN). Compared to this, the 0 setting is a quarter-stop slower. The 1/2 setting is .9 stops slower. The 1 setting is 1.3 stops slower.
I would expect it to vary by lens. A real traditional K mount decides how much to move the lever based on where it stops, not an absolute index relative to the mount itself. I expect the 0 on the adapter to correspond to where a perfect lens has it stop, but they let you move it further in case your lens isn't quite matched to this (usually irrelevant) spec.

A good way to test this would be to see if it turns more or less with different lenses, or at least more (towards OPEN) with no lens.

SMC Pentax-M 1:2 50mm

I tested the lowly F2 50mm Pentax M on the Q this evening.
This manual lens has great focus action, and the aperture to F2 is nice because it avoids diffraction issues on the Q.

Using it is fun, but if you are a pixel peeper you will find some issues.
In the conditions I tested the light was not harsh, yet it is possible to see some of the bad tendencies the lens can have.
On the shot of the mixing board at f2.8, ISO 800 there is evidence of green edges on the back side of the white knobs.
On the moon shot you can make out some purple fringe around the top edge. Moon shot was at ISO 125, F4.

Overall impression is if you are looking for an easy to focus, hand holdable lens that you can use for low light events like concerts, consider this an option.
Resulting crop factor makes it a 275mm tele. And did I mention it can be had real cheap?

Given the high-contrast edges, that's really not too bad for longitudinal CA with an adapted lens. And the bokeh looks rather good.

Doesn't look too shabby to me for an 275/f2 equivalent lens that can be had for the Princely sum of $15.

DA 1:2.4 70mm LTD

The DA70 LTD is an excellent small lens that on the Q will offer a 385mm equivalent reach.
Hand holding is easy as the Q's SR is very effective at controlling shake.

The Q is brutal on lenses so even though this lens is wonderful on APSC, on the Q it shows some deficiencies.
Wide open at 2.4 you will see quite a bit of purple and green outlines in high contrast areas.
The lens works best stopped down to around F4 where the CA gets under control (position 2 on the adapter.)

The manual focus ring is a little slim so focus is not as fun as with the older manual lenses.
The great thing, though is the DA70+Q is a tiny package that can make it easy to get those long range candids.
Also, the bokeh is very nice from this lens on the Q.

It's raining here so sorry for the crappy subjects.

F4 ISO800 1/20 (handheld on a 385mm lens, thanks to the Q's great SR!)

F4 ISO125 1/60 hand held again

With better lighting you can stop down further to reduce the CA. I don't recall the settings on this early shot but it does not look so bad. Probably f5.6

Looks pretty sharp Crewl! I'm a bit surprised at the a tad high CA, but the Q really brings that out.

I think in better light you can stop down further and get rid of it some more.
I added an older shot that I did with the Fotodiox and did not track the settings but it was a brighter environment so I assume I was able to stop down more.
I presume a f5.6 since the diffraction is not showing too bad.
This could be the sweet spot for the lens, I just need better light to confirm.
