New Toshiba 20MP 1/2.3" sensor

Toshiba : News Release 26 Dec, 2012

Announced last week; production to begin later in the year.

I suppose f/4 would be about the limit on this sensor, before the diffraction penalty takes over.

As much as anything I'm interested in the higher video frame rates, and RAW video capture.

Will the Q go in this direction?

I'd love to see the frame rate. 20MP? Meh. The Q's 12MP is plenty for me. I don't print any larger than 13 x 19. I'd rather have the hard drive space and have my images process faster.

Interesting news though. We'll see what happens!

That would probably be huge for the Q! Sounds like improved DR, one thing that holds back the smaller sensors. 100fps mode at HD would be nice but they really would have to beef up the image processing to achieve that.

For the Q with native lenses, I agree. For ultra-telephoto with adapted lenses, the advantage of the Q system isn't the sensor size per se, it's the pixel size. We may already be near the maximum in terms of this advantage; pixel-level detail isn't really there even on the current Q sensor, and there's only so far you can push this kind of magnifying effect before camera shake and optical limitations become too great to overcome in practical terms. But I sure am interested in seeing where tiny pixel technology is going, and whether or not further gains are possible.

i'm waiting to see when they will start to "bin" the pixels.
I mean no one needs 20mp but if they can use those 20mp to make a very very good 10mp photo.

One of the nokia's is already doing that.

I can see your point for adapted lenses, especially for macro work. And you're right about the camera shake also. I don't own a tripod that is stable enough to easily manually focus a 300mm mounted to the Q
