A simple question on the Q camera.

I have been reading the threads here but can't find the answer to a simple question. Does Pentax make an adapter to use K lenses on the Q cameras? If so. Is it available now? How much is it? Is it any better than the Chinese models? Would you suggest using it with a Pentax DA 55-300mm lens to get hyper zoom features for birding? Any input appreciated. Thanks.

Pentax does make a K-Q adapter. See: Pentax Adapter Q for K-mount Lenses 39977 B&H Photo Video

Can't answer if it's better than the Chinese or Fotodiox models.

I've seen people say the DA 55-300 is pretty good on the Q - not as sharp as using something like a DA*300, but it's reasonable.

I didn't know that it could be that expensive. It would be simpler to buy an hyperzoom camera like the Canon SX50 or the Nikon equivalent which would be a lot less that buying the adapter and a Q camera. The sensor on the Q is not much larger than the one on the Canon anyway so the result is probably equivalent. Thanks for the info.

I believe the Fotodiox adapters are quite cheap, and give good performance. The DA 55-300 ends up being a 308-1680mm (5.6x ratio or so) I believe, which is longer than any superzoom out there right now I think.

There are way cheaper adapters around, just search for "Q to pentax k adapter". The main difference is that the official one got a built in shutter so you can use a shutter speed faster than 1/13s with flash, no jello effect like the electronic shutter and a couple of other things. Check this and other threads out: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-q/173602-reach-q-images.html

You need to read more. This has all been answered and discussed in detail here in this very forum, over and over, with pictures and explanations.

Hi VE2CJW,

I've yet to see a super zoom that can do this:

https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-q/204091-q-fw-v1-1-da-55-300-handheld.html

These are with the DA 55-300 handheld, and were with an RJ (3rd party and not as expensive) adapter.

Not necessarily a valid assumption. If sensor size was the only thing that affected IQ the K5 and K10D would be identical; not to mention that NO super-zoom can match a good prime.
