Thanks Riv. That was extremly helpful. I got the 06 Lens today and installed a shim just a few minutes ago. It's really an improvement.

What is it about this range of lens with Pentax? The 06 Q 15-45 needs a shim, the DA-16-45 can't be shot upward positioned vertical at 16mm (full extention) because the barrel can't withstand gravity (droops). Well, that's OK because in every other respect the 16-45 is pretty fine - even adapted on the Q (perhaps especially on the Q based on the tests I've done). Hard for me to spring for the 15-45 if it needs a shim - just not quite the miniature quality build I otherwise associate with the Q system.

I agree that Pentax should have damped the focus rings on all their Q lenses more than they did, plus there should have been a rib dividing the zoom and focus rings, so that the focus ring wouldn't be accidentally touched when zooming by either fingers or by the close tolerances between zoom & focus rings themselves.

That said, I haven't noticed the 06 as particularly worse than the 01 or 02 in this regard. Focus assist is unintentionally invoked with all three lenses often enough that I wish there was a better firmware implementation to allow disabling it -- maybe require OK to be pressed before using focus ring. Frankly I wish the Q had one more customizable button somewhere so I don't have to give up green button for exposure/hypermanual/hyperprogram etc. to have AF-enable/AF-disable functionality.

The shim is an interesting idea, I may need to try this.

Actually, that is a bit of my grief with the Q: the camera is great, solid, sturdy and retro -- but the lenses...oh, the lenses, while optically great, they're "plasticky and flimsy". I'd love to see Pentax release a few "limited" style lenses, preferably primes, for the Q line. Or, why not, a limited zoom for the Q, as long as it's the robustness and quality and "metal" feel as we knew in the last millennia...

Well my 06 is utterly hopeless. I sincerely hope it is a defective copy rather than representative of the expected performance.
At 15mm it is reasonably sharp across the frame wide open, and has produced some nice images, but beyond about 20mm the edge sharpness deteriorates rapidly to the point where at 45mm only about the central 10% is remotely useable.
I will post some flat wall test shots to illustrate once they upload.

Hum, I do not have the 06 (yet) but judging from what I have seen here on PF, its most definitely possible to exhort great shots from that lens.

I think that you have a dud, should send it back?

wow .. there's got to be something wrong, there's no way that the 06 (or any name brand) lens could be designed that bad!

I consistently get good results from my 06. Although it is my second one as the first had serious focusing issues so you could very well have a lemon.
