Firmware update reminder

For all of those in on the recent deals, don't forget to do the firmware update. Over the holidays I let it slide. Did it today, was an easy process, and it made a world of difference for auto-focus in my hands.

Also remember to update the firmware for the lenses. It should be done before updating the camera (or you may have to reapply).

Yes, update the lens(es) and don't forget that if you have both the 01 and 02 you need that specific lens on the camera in order to update its firmware. So, you may have to do 2 or 3 updates, but it's definitely worth it.

And when you update the body it forgets your custom settings. I use continuous file numbering. The Q switched to date. Took a while to catch and fix it.
thanks

hi all my first post here . question, the lens firmware 01 and 02 is the 2011 release (1.01) right, or there's later version?

Those are the current firmware versions for the 01 and 02. When in doubt check the Pentax Japan website

Thanks for posting this info.
Don't have my Q yet, but had no idea there was a lens firmware update too.

Yes, it's a bit of a hidden issue but they do improve performance IMHO. There is one for each of the lenses mentioned, none for the 06 has been released yet. The thing that tripped me up the first time through is I tried to install the 02 firmware when I had the 01 on the camera. No go. You have to have the actual lens installed on the camera in order to install the firmware for that lens.

I believe that the actual code is stored on a chip on the lens itself and not on the camera, so it makes sense to require the correct lens during the update.

Yes, I also believe that is the case. It's just so different than anything I have had before that it took me by surprise. It's really a smart move on Pentax's part as it allows them to tweak the lens itself and since they have their own shutter that could be a real plus in the long run.

order really important?

I saw the lens firmware option, but hadn't been aware there were updated issues... Anyway, is there a pentax source that says these should be done in a certain order? I did camera, then lens, seems fine, and it would seem the normal course as folks acquire new lenses. Fun little camera, now have to convince myself to sell the spare body that's coming with the 01 lens

Adam have any write up from the holiday outing I saw pictures of yet?

Just to echo korimako's post, is the sequence important in updating? Did not realize there were firmware updates for the lenses and already updated the camera firmware.

Do I have to update it all over again?

Thanks.
