I finally got a clear enough night since finishing off my barn door tracker to try it out, since its a little small and flimsy I thought a good first test would be the Q+01 lens since its light, and I can shoot 30' exposures. I didnt try aligning by sight, I just used my phone as a compass for direction (South), location (to get the latitude) and level to set the angle to my current latitude. When using a longer lens I plan to set alignment like this followed by a little bit more drift alignment.
It works! This is a 100% of the WORST exposure (tracking wise) @ 30 secs
And this is the BEST @ 30 secs
After this I toned it down to 15 secs but higher ISO for 13 shots, before the clouds came over
I then quickly stacked what I had (+4 dark frames) in DeepSkyStacker for this result (4x 30' ISO 125 f2.8, 13x 15' ISO 200 f2.8, 4x DARK 15' ISO 200). Only a small portion of the frame here...
And this is what it looks like....
4x AA into ebay $1.50 buck regulator into ebay $7 3v 3rpm motor + some 48p pinion gears, some bent M6 threaded rod and a couple more bits to put it all together...
Some adjustments to be made with the gearing so I can run a bit more voltage & higher torque and the rod radius could use some tidying as well. Once I improve tracking a little more the next test will probably be the 30mm f1.4 on the Q (~165mm equiv) before I move onto astro with the K-5 & the 70-200mm or Tair 300mm and take the setup travelling out of the backyard to where the skies are darker!
