front button: dot, 1,2,3,4

anyone know what are the default image settings for the front button on the q-- i've never really changed them , only have used b&w which is no.1, not sure what the others are, or how complicated it is to customize them

Very easy to customize them. There are a bunch of settings that can be accessed via the menus to change the front dial.

It's listed in the menus as the "Quick Dial" Camera 3 in the menus.
Right button and you get to the possibilities
Smart Effects, Custom Image, Digital Filter, Aspect Ratio

Each has 4 changeable options and they're all very visual and easy to identify as you play with them.

Really love the front dial design. Just wished I could set different features like double exposure.

Indeed. The design is something I would like to see on every camera, but allowing full customization.

Can't say if it was actually modeled after these, but the early Asahi Pentax cameras (mid to late 50's) had a front dial on the other side, which was used for slow shutter speeds. Here's a shot of my 1957 K with the dial camera-right and a link to the review in the PF m42 Film Cameras database.

Neat idea - just too shame that those settings are limited in what can be customized....essentially this knob is (at least, was when I played with it around firmware 1) relevant to jpeg photographers only, who want to run the photo through some in-cam digital filter.

I'd love to be able to say 1= RAW, 2 = raw+autobracket, 3=HDR etc.....alas, this wasn't possible.

So, to me this knob is just decorative....unfortunately.

man, that's a beautiful 1957 camera, there's something about these old camera isn't there - even the lettering-- and it does kinda look like they copied the front button from it too. cool.
