For what it's worth, I shot a bunch of photos with it yesterday with the new "buggy" firmware & it worked like a champ. No glitches at all, and lightning fast AF. I switched stuff around a lot too... Different modes, different quick-dial settings, etc. No problems at all.

Has anyone got a link to an official statement from PR that there is an actual bug and is the reason it was pulled from the .jp site?

Making a clarifying statement would ber highly unusual for Pentax. It remains up to us to guess. My guess is the FW upgrade was actually for the Q10 and the 'Bug" is wiping the actuation incrementer from ROM in the Q. If that is the case there must be some small code change in the Q10 that was overlooked.

As far as I'm concerned I'm leaving v1.11 on the Q until they explain what happened and tell me I'll brick (well, more like DUPLO) my cameras if I don't remove it.

+1 to your post, after reading all the comments of improved AF I decided to update my Q before the US link is gone. I can always go back, I traded my 01 for an 02 and the reduced AF speed and ability at the long end of the zoom indoors was problematic compared to the 01. I find I an using the 02 much more than my old 01 but it needed the improvement in AF. It's still under warranty and a Pentax provided FW update should not void it.

.
I find that highly doubtful.
[1] They noted (warned) that it would reset the camera. You don't note a bug.
[2] A firmware for a different model would be rejected if you tried to apply it.
[3] The latest firmware for the Q10 is V1.01

The fact that the firmware remains available other than the .jp site doesn't really convince me that a bug exists at all.
That and that my Q is quite happy since the update.
I don't see much value in guessing and having some people becoming anxious about damaging their cameras when there is no evidence to suggest any danger or even any bug.

Enjoy your new faster Q.. I am

I'm pretty sure that they used code originally for the Q10 and adapted it for the Q, copy/paste is pretty common practice. Maybe they worked with the original Q10 firmware and left in the factory shutter count reset?

People keep looking for the bug, and maybe there is another one, but resetting the shutter count (not just the file count, but the permanent shutter count) is a BUG, a real bug, so that's enough.

If that's the bug, I can live with it for the radically faster & better AF I'm getting. I don't use that feature, anyway.

I found the same bug in my Q also. But I actually like the effect and with the much improved af i don't have any desire for a fix

When dodel pointed out the bug i shot a few test pics with the tone expansion turned on. I didn't have any use for the original filter but may now as I suspect that the "buggy" filter when used with Nik silver efex will produce some interesting BnW

So, is there a qualified expert who can correctly explain what exactly is tone 'expansion'? Is it the opposite of tone 'compression' (where tones sit bunched up in the histogram)? Can someone show me a histogram of tone expansion against what would be considered a well balanced photo's histogram?

I've checked the Pentax Q manual for more about this, but nothing.

Is it supposed to be the same as tone mapping?

But then the Q10 firmware is probably an altered version of the Q's firmware.
