Defective 06

I have tried to work it out but it's just not right. My 06 will not focus 95% of the time on a infinity subject when set in the 15 to 24mm zoom range. It will focus correctly on closer subjects and it also focuses correctly for any subject distance with the zoom set to 24mm or longer.

I have no problems with focus on the 01 or the 02 any distance or zoom range. Time to contact Pentax

Has anyone had this type of problem with the 06?

Hans

Most of my use of the 06 has been at the long end. I'll have to run some tests.

My first 06 I got from B&H was also defective. Had troubles focusing half the time. Sent it back for an exchange and haven't had any problems with the second one at all.

Sorry to hear Hans.
I haven't noticed any issues with mine but I will do some tests tomorrow and report back.
Are there any specific conditions such as lighting or subject types?

Thanks guys the conditions are zoom at the wide end from 15mm to about 24mm and any subject even subjects with sharp contrast that are at infinity. The lens will not focus (red square) but I can manual focus the lens correctly. I have had the lens for about 20 days and mostly used it at the long end with no problems.

Thanks for the response, when I consider all zoom ranges mine sounds like yours about 50%

Just tested the 06 at all focal lengths pointed towards a light pole about 3 blocks away.
Tried a few times at each spot on the barrel 15, 20, 24, 30, 45
Green focus indicator snaps right on just after depressing the shutter button halfway.
It takes just a moment longer if I manually de focus the lens before hand but I don't see it hunting.
Close inspection of the pictures shows that the camera is getting the focus correct.

Sky is gloomy so light pole looks dark, giving good contrast.

I am using the hood, with AF set to center point spot.
FW versions - camera 1.11 lens 1.00
Let me know if you need me to test other settings.

Sounds like yours may have a problem.

Hi Hans,

Mine focuses fine outdoors in conditions ranging from heavy overcast to bright sunshine at all FLs and distance ranges. This is with both bodies. I have and use the JJC hood at all times.

Based on the consumer feedback on Valleyseek, you probably won't get any help from them. Pentax should do something for you under warrantee. My 06 from Valleyseek seems fine, sorry you got a bum lens.

Good deal, sorry you need to do it but I hope they'll just fix it for you and you can enjoy a fully functional 06.

I've had good luck when I've sent things to them for servicing. Hopefully you'll get it back soon.
