The Q has a small sensor with poor dynamic range compared to larger sensors. You will clip highlights when the amount of light exceeds its capability such as light glaring off shiny surfaces. You can under expose and pull up the shadows on the RAW file to get more DR than the JPEG engine typically gives you.
+1. That's one of the first things I noticed with the Q, it has significantly lower DR than my K-5 or K-x. Compared to these cameras I will either loose highlights or shadows in high contrast pictures. Neither do the images (RAW) stand up as well to saving highlights or lifting shadows in PP compared to larger sensor cameras. It's a price you pay for the compact format (=small sensor).

I suspect that verdigris, snostorm & tuco are right on this one, and I thought that might be the case. I had the K-x with me and it was set to RAW, so I got the more high quality shots with that. I had my wife take a few with the Q just to see what would happen.

Still, I think it looks pretty decent, even in this worst-case scenario. I can live with that at ISO1600.

Higher ISO also decrease the DR.
So with ISO1600 you don't get 11ev with the Q, the Kx most likely will hold it up better.

Oh yeah... You're right there... That's why I took the K-x for the higher quality shots.
