Q7 improvements over Q10

Let's get our analysis done as we learn about the Q7. How is it better or different from the Q10 other than the obvious - 12 megapixel, 1/1.7-inch, back-illuminated Sony CMOS sensor?
  • improved shake reduction said to give 3 stops vs 2 stops on the Q10.
  • new anti-reflective coating,
  • dual axis electronic level,
  • Eye-Fi compatibility
  • HDR interval movie timelapse function
  • AF Focus EV0-EV18
  • 12,800 ISO
  • Faster Startup time
  • Autofocus during movie operation

  • Different focal lengths angles of view from the Q & Q10

Could we say different angles of view instead, in the (vain) hope that fewer people will be completely confused about what focal length is? (Yes, I realize people don't know what angle of view is and will just be more confused, but it really doesn't change the focal lengths of the lenses.)

Good point about the angle of view. That ought to be good news for those people who say Q can't do wide (even though there are already some lenses)

It changes the effective focal length but either that or angle of view is fine with me.

Is it true that CIPA battery rating is even lower now? I suppose that's the price to be paid with a larger sensor.

From Pentax Japan:
Q7 "Number of recordable images: approx. 250 images (with 50% flash usage), approx. 260 images (without flash usage), approx. 240 images(with 100% flash usage)Playback time: approx. 160 minutes* Using a new Rechargeable lithium-ion battery at a temperature of 23 °C. These are estimates for testing conditions in compliance with CIPA standards, but actual values will vary depending on usage condition."

Q10 "Number of recordable images: approx. 250 (with 50% flash usage), approx. 270 (without flash usage) Playback time: approx. 160 minutes • Tested in compliance with CIPA standards using a new rechargeable lithium-ion battery at 23 °C. Actual results may vary depending on shooting conditions.

Seems nearly identical to me with a 10 shot difference in the "without flash usage" category.

I'm also wondering about this quote from the ePhotozine.com preview of the Q7: "The body is made from metal and the buttons are also very small, if you have large fingers..."

Is that a copy-paste from some original Q review? The Q10 has a plastic body!

LOTS of rushing to get "reviews" out that aren't really reviews. LOTS of mistakes. I tend to go with what Pentax Japan puts up until someone I trust like Adam says otherwise (or a member here that actually has the gear).

Pentax says:
Thanks to the improvements in the image-processing algorithm, the Q7 captures beautiful Full HD movie clips (1920 x 1080 pixels, at 30 frames per second, in the H.264 recording format) with minimal noise, even during high-sensitivity recording at ISO 12800. A new interval HD movie recording function adds more creativity to visual expression. The user can also take advantage of advanced image-processing tools including the Smart Effect modes,** an array of in-body movie editing tools, and autofocus operation during movie shooting.

Launched as the flagship model of the popular PENTAX Q series , the PENTAX Q7 offers casual, carefree digital-SLR-quality photography to everyone. Thanks to a new 1/1.7-inch, back-illuminated CMOS image sensor — the largest in the Q series — the Q7 delivers image quality that has been much improved from its sister models. It also offers a host of the advanced features expected in a top-of-the-series model, including high-sensitivity shooting at a top sensitivity of ISO 12800 (compared to ISO 6400 for the Q10); improved shake-reduction performance; reduced operation time lag at start-up and between exposures; and effortless, user-friendly operation. In addition, it features an array of creative tools such as Bokeh Control and Smart Effect, which assist the photographer in easily creating more personalized images.

I don't know about anyone else, but this makes me a little sad. . . . I've always really appreciated the magnesium body, but apparently build quality takes a back seat to price point. Too bad. . .

This is not to say that the SS chassis with polycarbonate body construction is by any means shabby - Pentax bodies with this configuration have always been more solid (IMO) than the others. I guess that I just like the idea of a magnesium camera body -- and would be willing to pay significantly more for it. . .

Scott

edit: I must admit, I am warming a bit to the idea of a Q7. . . not enough to become an early adopter though. I'll wait to see if there have been any improvements in handling from actual users, then decide.

Looking at all this product growth and evolution in Q mount makes me more convinced than ever that something is going to happen in K-mount too.

If they put this much energy and step-by-step focus into tuning and improving Q, I don't think Pentax are going to stop at just jazzing up APS-C within K-mount anymore. They are going to go beyond APS-C, I reckon.
