Nice job Adam. Can't wait to see the full review. Do you find the coated lcd screen an improvement over the previous Q/Q10?
Hope you try the fisheye in your test. Want to know how much gets trimmed.
thanks

Nice article, Adam, looks promising! Could you check if the Q7 also only allows flash sync at 1/250s from the hotshoe? With the leaf shutter lenses, this would be amazing for using flash with higher shutter speeds. I find it very strange that Pentax has crippled the camera this way. Just look at the popularity of the Fuji X100s in the strobist community.

Oh man, the bigger sensor is making me seriously think about getting a Q7 someday. I love my Canon S95's image quality and compact size, but the Q7 would allow for changing the lens to a real telephoto zoom. Plus the silver color looks great!!

Yet another camera to lust after and find room for, not only in my budget but in the camera bag...

my wife will not be pleased.

Adam, can you confirm that the Quick Dial on the Q7
can be customized for "useful" functions like the ND filter?

And if so, are we likely to get that on the Q (and Q10)
in firmware updates?

If that happens for the Q, then I'd be a happy camper.

If it is a feature exclusive for the Q7, then I'd sit it out and wait for a Q7iis (or whatever it'll be called) with metal body and retro look like the original Q -- I really do not like the look of the Q10 and Q7...

The quick dial can be used to set special effects, aspect ratio, af/mf, nd, and focus peaking.

Unfortunately, you can't mix and match, but at least they added a bit more customizability.

[T]hey added a bit more customizability.

Thanks for the confirmation.

How can we lobby to get this done
in firmware on the older 1/2.3" models?

As far as the ND filter, I actually like being able to access it in the quick menu instead of the front dial. I can activate it with one button push and one click of the control dial - to me that is better than turning the camera around and looking at the front dial to see/change the position.

Since I only have the original Q,
I've never used the Quick Dial in earnest,
but it seems like you can click it round from behind
while you're looking at the LCD screen.

I'll admit also to never using the quick dial. I'll have to try it - maybe it shows the dial position on the LCD screen when you move it......?

It does display the scene settings,
e.g. "Brilliant Color", on the original Q.

There are 2 things I would love to see on the next Q.

1. Horizon correction (it has SR, so this shouldn't have been imposible?)

2. Auto-rotation of images - this drives be nuts when I'm going through images, having to rotate them.

Are either of these features on the new Q7?

Cheers, Tim.

Adam, thanks for the first impressions.

Any chance that the review will be out in 1-2wks time?
I have a chance to buy a Q7 in Japan around that time, so a review would certainly help in the decision.

Thx
