Lens trade

A while back I traded my 01 for an 02 on the market place. I felt limited with the 01 and after checking the photozone lens review on the 2 lenses and the 02 seemed as sharp (close) as the 01 in the 8mm range and in practice it is. All went great with the trade, got a new looking 02 for my new looking 01. Well after using the 02 for several months I missed my 01 just a little but not enough to trade back. I really like the 02 but as they are now selling the 01 I just had to get one again. Now to my question I received my new 01 the other day and the IQ is great just like my old 01 but it seems different and I think I put my finger on what it is. The lens outer barrel is plastic and I think my old 01 was metal, am I imagining things, are the older 01 lens barrels (where "01 Standard Prime is stamped) metal or were they always plastic and I am just loosing it. Love both lenses they are keepers.

I'm pretty sure they've always been made of plastic, but I'm not positive!

Mine's plastic and I've had it the longest. As Larry said, the hood is metal (and a nice one too).

I believe that my 01 (a very early one since I was an early adopter) has all metal construction. A knife point will easily dimple my 02's finish near the mount, but not the 01.

The camera yes, but the lenses? Doesn't make sense they would switch from metal to plastic without calling it a v2?

I have two 01 lenses. I pretty sure they both are plastic. I took a compass point and it seemed to make a indention.

The first one I bought back in the spring of 2012 with a serial number 3070607 the second one is 3082350.

The mount is metal. Short of scratching it I can't be sure but the weight and flex say plastic.

My 01 has a serial # of 3025xxx FWIW. The Q was scheduled for production of about 24K units.month, and for at least the first few months, the 01 was the only lens bundled as a kit, so I'm guessing it's from one of the first production runs. They could have changed the main barrel body when they originally made the decision to downgrade the body to the Q10 as a plastic barrel would be more practical for colors, and the superior build quality of the Q's metal body was constantly being undercut by the grumbling about the price. except for the resistance to dimpling by sharp objects, I'm really hard pressed to feel any difference between the base barrel for the 01 and 02, or 06.

What I found is my. 02 barrel is cooler to the tuch than my new 01 or my 06 (when ever I get it back) It wouldn't surprise me if they changed them all to plastic with the introduction of the Q10. Like Scott said it's easier to produce in colors.

I weighed my naked lens (no caps or hood) and it comes in at 36 grams or 1.2 oz

The specs on our site here have it at 37 grams. SMC Pentax-Q 01 Standard Prime 8.5mm F1.9 Reviews - Q-Mount Prime Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database

I would expect changing from metal to plastic would give a decrease in weight. Is it possible that we now have rare version of 01 that will command a higher price in the future?

Scott, can you weigh yours and see what it shows?

My serial number is 3039500.

My 02 barrel also appears to be made of metal.
There is a shiny ring that looks like polished aluminum in the middle of the zoom indicator, the ridges of the zoom barrel have become discolored, and the zoom pointer appears to be inlaid instead of painted like on the 06.
Hmmmm.

02 serial number is 3076886.
