Only because you are losing the corners altogether. Better to have all the image and modify/omit the hood I reckon.

Yes - but it is pretty 'barrelly' (new word?) at the edges so you'd have to correct in post anyway if you pick up any straight verticals.

Did you do surgery on your Uwinka/JJC?

Not yet Larry, but I probably will. I actually don't think the hood does much anyway - my shots without it don't look any different. The newer model appears to be a much better design.
As for the distortion, yes it is worth correcting it for architecture etc, but often with landscapes etc it isn't a big deal and the extra image is nice.
