There is a vigorous discussion in News and Rumors of a release rumor concerning the DA-Limited 20~40/2.8~4 ZOOM

Un-noticed on the thread is discussion of a Q/08 Wide Prime ZOOM. [EDIT: My bad - I was so excited about the word "Wide" I completely skipped the next word ]

From readers, we have to provide information about the new interchangeable lens of two Ricoh (Pentax).

possibility that Ricoh imaging in the near future, to announce the replacement lens of two of the following high.
PENTAX 08 Wide Zoom Lens
HD PENTAX-DA 20-40mm F2.8-4 ED Limited DC WR
Was published in the lens road map of Mount Q "08 Wide Zoom Lens" is like a "WIDE" lens. This lens Once released, I will be able to walk through cover to the telephoto from ultra wide-angle PENTAX Q.

"F2.8-4 ED Limited DC WR HD PENTAX-DA 20-40mm" is like a DA Zoom Limited which appeared in the lens road map of K mount as viewed from the focal length. Details are unknown, and the DC motor is built from the name, that you are in drip-proof structure seems to be a mistake. The focus area that is not seen much, this lens, it is going to be a lens quite unique.

If the wide zoom is sharp, I'd get it. The 5-15 is great and all, but leaves a little lacking for my walking around.

Doesn't it say wide zoom, not prime?

I describe the 02 ZOOM as "good enough for government work." The 06 is better and the 01 is really a pretty good lens.

My 01 (8.5 on original Q) is pasted onto my black Q and the white one has the 02 (5~15) and 06 (15~45) in the bag all the time. I just goof around with the Toy Fish Eye.

I wanted to get the 01, but 47mm FF equivalent is just a little too tight for me - I was hoping for something wider (35-43mm). So if this new wide zoom is sharper than the 02, but also encompasses 20-50mm FF equivalent, that'd be awesome.

A wide prime or very wide zoom would be welcome. Something akin to Sigma's 8-16 or Pentax 10-20 on APS-C would be really useful for the little Q. I'd probably buy one of those.

In the interview from April / May this year, Pentax team told that there are few different working 08 prototypes, and one of them will become official wide prime for Q.
I sincerely hope Ricoh listens to user's requests, and that will be no less than a wide, f1.4 lens at least. Which is quite possible with Q.

I would greatly prefer a fast prime....

I really wish Ricoh/Pentax did some F1.2/F1.0 primes already. In my ideal world the wide would be a F1.4 prime tops, the 01 prime would be re-issued as an F1.0 prime and the 02 telephoto would be re-issued as a constant F2.8 or F2.5.

I wish I had some clue about what makes it difficult to make fast lenses. f0.95 would be great on the Q series cameras. With sensors so small, it seems like it wouldn't be terribly difficult to design. But I have pretty much zero knowledge of optical design and manufacture.

Agreed. The 01 is a great lens, but I want something wider. I like my 12-24 but I want something wide to have handly while I'm packing my long lenses.

I also do not know exactly what it takes to produce the optics, but given another company had produced an F1.2 small Q telephoto before in limited run and given the size of the lens I see of the 01, I would like to think it's possible to do. But yeah, I could be wrong about how easy it may really be.

I'm not keeping my expectation high. I doubt that Pentax / Ricoh have any intention to make Q line any more serious than it already isn't. When 3 out of 7 lenses are toy lenses made to cost a peanut to produce, and others cling on the verge of sloppy craftsmanship, I have little optimism in expecting that they will "blow us all away" and suddenly turn the Q lens lineup into something that wasn't in the first place.

I hope the 08 is a fast wide prime, and the OP quote is a typographic error. There is very little wrong with the 02 in my opinion.

Most of the above complaints would be fixed by getting a Q7.

Put the 01 on the Q7. It's suddenly wider! About 38mm full-frame equivalent, and a very nice general purpose lens.
Put the 02 on the Q7. It's *really* wide!! About 22-67mm equivalent - i.e. a proper wide to normal zoom.
Put the 03 on and it's *stupidly* wide. It comfortably covers the full image circle of the bigger sensor too, although I think the other toy lenses may not.

Anyway, if you're after ultimate image quality, you shouldn't be using a Q in the first place.

You are right. Q is meant for scrapbook type of work by its own designers, and that is why high expectations about the 08 are unsubstantiated. I say, we're lucky if it's f2, and just good enough on the Q7 not to create excessive PF and wild distortions.
