The Q was greatly improved by the early firmware upgrades. You should do it. It is very easy if you carefully follow the simple directions found on the download site. Oh, and welcome to the Pentax Q discussion on PF. This is a very helpful and knowledgable group.

Welcome sebenza! Mikesul is correct about the firmware updates. Pentax greatly improved the Q system with many updates. The Q will focus much quicker and have far fewer lockups. You also get focus peaking and the ability to set focal length for image stabilization with adapted lenses.

The camera is good at helping with fw updates. If the update isn't on the SD card correctly, the camera refuses the update. Have many friends with Q's. Not a one has bricked their camera. Keep in mind that the 01 and 02 lenses also have FW updates.

Some things to watch when doing updates:

1. Absolutely freshly charged battery.
2. Pick correct update for your Q body model. Same with lenses.
3. Use empty, formatted SD card to put one FW update on at a time.
4. Don't touch camera during update.

The Q will wipe out all your custom settings. Make sure you write them down. If you have the Q set to continuous file numbering the FW usually resets to the next highest prefix number. Img100-xxxx sets to img110-xxxx.

Follow the instructions and you will be fine. Enjoy your "new" Q!
thanks

It doesn't improve the AF slightly... It improves it tremendously. Do the firmware upgrade as directed, and with a freshly charged battery, and you will be amazed by the difference in AF speed and accuracy. Plus, you'll get focus peaking, which is extremely useful.

Glad to hear you did it. Did you also update the lens firmware as suggested by Barondla?
