Which adapter did you end up with?
I seem to recall someone using a cheap canon clone with some leather to space it, you might be able to find the post if you search in the Q forum.
You may be better off trying to rig a tripod ring for your lens vs the adapter.

I'm gonna try this one, it's cheap. It's inner diameter is 1mm larger than the diameter of the 55-300.
