It's here, the Pentax Q-S1

Hi, just got my Q-S1 last night and have been playing around with it. I've attached a few photos. I'll be doing a full video review of the camera sometime this weekend. I only have a Pentax Q and Nikon P340 ( newest 1/1.7" sensor ) to compare too. So far, Pentax Q-S1 is winning on IQ and across the board. Very impressed, the system has truly matured and AF is very fast, including start up times.

Congrats! it look very nice. Is the knob on the right a problem when holding vs your old Q?

Hi, thank you. I will try to get some more professional sample photos ( no editing ), out later.

No, the knob has not been a problem for me. I have smaller hands, and when you hold the camera, my ring finger can now "grip" or "hook" around the knob to have a stable hold on the camera. It hasn't been a problem as people suspected. Maybe if you have very large hands, but even when not "hooking" around the knob, the camera is slightly larger and more comfortable to hold. Of course, the Q7 may still be more comfortable, but It is more comfortable than my Q.

Knightzerox, cool pics of your new camera. Sounds like you are happy with the Q-S1. Can't wait to see more pics. Consider entering the compact camera contest in that forum.
thanks

Nice picture of the camera, more flattering than the adverts I've seen. It has a very Soviet era industrial design vibe to it. I like the look of it much more than I expected. Pentax should hire you to take their product shots.

Thanks! Sure, I'll submit some photos to the contest. I'll probably setup a shoot sometime this weekend and really give it a workout. Here is an additional picture of the Q. Both the one above and this one were actually taken with my new Nikon P340 pocketable compact.

Here are a few more shots. Will post my overall review in a few days. Have found some interesting things so far.

Just an FYI, the files attached below look worse on Pentax Forums because they get compressed. The original JPEGS are much sharper and look great.

I was interested in your comments about the size and how it fit in your hand. I felt the same way when I went from the Q to the Q10. That extra 1mm in each directing seemed to make a bit difference. How do you usually hold this new camera? Can you post a photo?

It looks like you got the 01 Prime lens with your Q-S1. Hopefully it was part of the package. If so it’s good to see that they are again offering the 01 Prime lens as part of the kit.

I would be interested to see how the IQ of this Q-S1 compares to the Q7. I found a slight difference between the Q and the Q10 but then a big difference between the Q and the Q7.

Are those JPG or processed RAW images you have posted?

Congratulations on the new camera.

Denny

It looks like the original Q crossed with a high-end rangefinder, a good look.

Yes, and now the Q-S1 is a hair bigger than the Q7. It overall feels good. I'll try and get a shot of my holding the camera, but I hold it two ways depending if I'm using AF lock or not. Normally I hold it with my finger on top of the shutter button and my thumb extended on the back, like most people. When using the green button for AF lock, I have my thumb more bent and hitting the button with the tip of my thumb almost. Also my finger will "hook" more around the knob.

I actually just got the body, the 01 lens I've had since the first Q. They are however offering the prime in a kit lens when you order a custom color, it will even come matching to the body in silver , gunmetal, black, and gold I believe.

All the photos above are in JPEG from the camera as is. Of course not the pro looking shots of the Q-S1 itself. I will provide some RAW's later. Thank you.

Hi, I did not see anything in any of the menus about changing the focus peak color. Maybe a firmware update or next release? I will say the focus peaking seems to work better. I never had good results with the focus peaking on the old Q.
