Pictures coming out as "?"

Hi all, I just got my brand new, slightly used (according to ebay user) Pentax Q yesterday. I updated the firmware to 1.13 and the lensware to 1.01 for the 02 lens yesterday also. Today just doing practice shots, I was happy - till tonight when I was playing with the black and white setting taking pictures of my two dogs. The Instant Review I saw was awesome - perfect pictures just the way I wanted - so i took some more, again nice pictures on the Instant Review but when I went into the playback mode to all i saw was question marks in place of my my badass pictures.
What causes this? it is extremely frustrating. And I can't find anything anywhere else. Thanks for the help.

G'day and welcome to the PF, congrats on your new Q.
Not an expert, but did you format the memory cards after your update.
This is what I would do. But someone with more experience and knowledge will be around soon.

could this be a raw file format thing? and the images need to be processed after the initial preview? I don't know but curious.....

Try a different SD card, and use the format function in the camera to format. See if that helps.

I replaced the SD card and it hasn't done it again yet. I can't remember if i formatted the one i was using before, but I'm sure I did to copy the firmware updates. I just got it and I like it, i just don't want this to happen when I'm out somewhere and I'm taking pictures just to come home and see that nothing got recorded.
Has this ever happened to anyone else?

I've seen it with bad sd cards.
After using your card to load firmware be sure to format it in the camera.
Cards that are formatted on your computer may not be recognized properly in the camera.

ah...firmware update should be deleted off the card after the camera is updated.....I delete the update file with my computer and then format the card in the camera
not that I know but that's what I do anyways
